Worsbrough common primary May Newsletter

It’s the end of May and we have 6 school weeks left! There is so much to squeeze in but I’m sure it will fly by and before we know it it will be the summer holidays!

Children across school have achieved so much this last year! They have worked incredibly hard and made huge amounts of progress! You should all be incredibly proud. One of our school values is RESILIENCE and this past year has really shown the value of this! It’s not been an easy ride but we’ve stuck at it and worked incredibly hard.

We usually use our monthly newsletter to showcase the amazing work that has happened across school however this month we are focusing on the importance of keeping active as we prepare for the start of Beat the Street!

What is beat the street?

Beat the Street is a fun, free initiative that will see Barnsley transformed into a giant game!

See how far you can walk, cycle, run, scoot and roll in just 6 weeks. There are great challenges to enjoy and prizes up for grabs.

The game will start on 10 June and end on 22 July 2021.

Beat the Street is a real life walking, cycling and running game for a whole community, which runs from Thursday 10th June 2021 - Thursday 22nd July 2021. Beat the Street is funded by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, Sport England and the National Lottery, and is being delivered by Intelligent Health.

Played outdoors in the local community, Beat the Street is the perfect way to get you and your family back into action, off screens and out of the house, having fun and exercising together. We have been working alongside Barnsley's public health advisors to ensure the game can be launched safely.

Being physically active improves physical and mental health and boosts our body’s natural immunity to fight off viruses, including coronavirus.

Score points and win prizes by walking, cycling or running from point to point and swiping a registered Beat the Street card or fob at contactless sensors (Beat Boxes) which are placed on lamp posts across Barnsley. Check out the map to see where you can play!

There are fantastic prizes on offer for individuals and teams on the 15 leaderboards for schools, community groups & workplaces along with running and cycling groups! School teams are able to win prizes of up to £150 of sport or book vouchers on each leaderboard while community and sports teams will be eligible to win up to £150 worth of sports and fitness vouchers.

Last year we were the winning school, despite the 'cheating' claims from other schools! We won because our community pulled together. We have been involved in the promotional photographs for this years launch and I don’t fancy giving up the champion title so this is where we need your help!

It has been great to start running club back up this term and we have had a really positive turn out even in the rain! Each week numbers have increased and we are running further and further. Our running club members run at least a mile each week around our local area. Our favourite route is to Locke Park and back. After the holidays we will be extending running club so that we can run a little further and earn more Beat the Street points - this will start on the first week back after the holidays!

We have been tracking our miles on our Worsbrough Common Primary School Strava account - don't forget to track yours too!

Remember to keep active over half term - Barnsley Museums have planned some fantastic activities happening in both our outside spaces or from the comfort of your home. We have everything from walks and scavenger hunts to crafts, and storytelling, for endless hours of fun.
