Addition & Renovation Completion 2018-2019 School Year
The Carver HS For Applied Tech/Engineering/Arts facility located at 2100 S Victory Dr in Houston, Texas, was built in 1951. It comprises 261,755 gross square feet not including the new additions.
The Carver High School Renovations Project consists of a new 16,000 square foot art wing and 5,700 square foot library addition. New flooring, painting of the walls, new ceilings and lighting systems were incorporated in the administration area. New flooring, ceilings and lighting systems, and resilient fiber reinforced wall panels were incorporated in the corridors. The corridors are brighter and present a new friendly and clean environment for the students. The renovation for Carver High School included converting the existing library into two new science classrooms. The nurse and clinic area also received a new modern look.
September 2016 Updates
Phase I
Carver High School renovation included the renovation of the Administration area, installation of marlite panels in the corridors, refresh of cafeteria, and the renovation of classrooms. Additional work for the summer project included the renovation of the teacher’s lounge, book room, assistant principal and counselor’s offices.
Phase II
Will consist of the addition of a new 16,000 square-foot wing, 2 – 1200 square-foot science labs and a 5700 sf Learning Resource Center. The Construction Document Phase continues. Permit documents have been submitted to the City of Houston.
January 2017 Updates
Phase I: Summer renovations are complete. The work for Phase I included the restoration of the Administration Offices and the corridors: 100, 200, and 400. The Administration Offices received a cosmetic makeover with new carpet, wall mounted desks/cabinets, LED lighting and wall paint. The corridors were upgraded with the installation of impact resistant panels on the corridor wall surfaces. New air conditioning units were installed and the lockers received a fresh coat of paint. Classrooms were modernized in the 200 corridor with new wall paint, floor tiles, LED lighting, cabinets and marker boards. The cafeteria was also refreshed with a new coat of paint and ceiling tiles.
Phase II
In preparation to erect a new 16,000 square-foot art wing, two 1,200 square-foot science labs, and a 5,700 square-foot Learning Resource Center, all classrooms scheduled for demolition have been relocated to the former Staff Development Center. This location is also housing all library books and shelving from the existing facility, while the new library addition is being erected.
Preparation work to demolish the classrooms in the 300 corridor has begun with the relocation of the existing underground utilities for preservation, . Since the demolition requires asbestos removal, a 10 day notice to the state of Texas is required to identify the removal period. This 10 day notice has already been filed with the state.
February 2017 Updates
Utilities, such as electrical, sanitary and storm water piping are being re-routed. A walkway and wood fence will be erected between building 100 and building 200 at the courtyard to provide for student safety.

March 2017 Updates
The layout of the new classroom wing requires the relocation of power poles between the existing cafeteria and 300 wing.
April 2017 Updates
Utilities running to the 300 wing have been disconnected and re-routed to prepare for demolition. Demolition of the 300 wing and existing library began the week of March 13, 2017. After STAAR Testing ended, debris removal for the 300 wing continued through the week of April 1, 2017.
MAy 2017 Updates
The new science labs will include new lab tables, sinks, and teacher workstations. Installation of electrical raceways, mechanical duct work, and plumbing are in progress at the science labs. Site utilities have been routed to the existing campus with the exception of electric. Excavation is in progress for new underground power. Existing power poles will be removed once the new power system is connected. Demolition and debris haul off is complete at the 300 Building Wing. Demolition of the existing science classrooms at 200 Building Wing will begin after the new underground power is installed.
The existing overhead power lines have been disconnected and removed, and the new underground electrical system is operational. Demolition of the existing science classrooms at the 200 corridor is complete, while preparation of the building pad for the new Learning Resource Center is in progress. The building pad at the new art wing has been constructed with imported fill dirt and pier installation will follow. Structural steel for the new art wing has been delivered and is staged for installation. Demolition and installation of the mechanical and plumbing rough-in at the new science room locations continues. The saw cutting of floor slabs is complete, which allows for new underground plumbing in the science classrooms. The detention pond has been excavated and regraded. Renovations have begun in the existing nurse and police offices.
Compaction of new fill is complete at the new Learning Resource Center, piers and grade beams are in progress. Piers have been staked and the building corners have been established. Slab on grade and structural steel will follow.
Slab on grade preparation is in progress for the new art wing. Form work, vapor barrier, and re-bar have been installed. All underground plumbing and electrical is complete and the building pad is ready to receive concrete. Structural steel has been delivered to the site and ready for installation upon concrete slab on grade completion.
September 2017 Updates
Structural steel framing is complete for the new Learning Resource Center. Building dry in including metal roof decking and metal stud framing are in progress with the installation of air and water barrier sheathing over metal studs. Brick veneer will follow the completion of concrete masonry block walls.
The new science classrooms are complete with the installation of science lab tables, utilities, technology equipment including projectors and data ports, drying racks, goggle sanitizer, and storage facilities.
The new Clinic is complete with the installation of built in casework, lighting, central heating and cooling, and restroom facilities.
Structural steel erection including column, bar joist, and girder erection, is complete. Structural roof framing and roof dry in is complete including the metal roof decking. Metal stud framing, concrete masonry block, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing overhead has begun. Brick veneer begins upon concrete masonry block wall completion.
October 2017 Updates
Exterior brick veneer installation for the new learning resource center is in progress. Completion of roofing is on schedule with the installation of light weight concrete and membrane roofing. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing overhead is complete. Interior wall framing including mechanical, electrical, and plumbing rough ins is complete. Installation of gypsum and interior insulation will follow.
November 2017 Updates
The construction of the new Art Wing’s exterior walls is on schedule with installation of concrete masonry walls on the north wall and the installation of the metal stud and exterior sheathing on the south wall. Brick veneer installation is on schedule, nearing completion. The roof construction is completed. Work continues in the interior of the new art wing with the installation of metal stud framing for interior walls as well as mechanical, electrical, and plumbing installation. HVAC duct installation continues.
Roofing installation is complete. HVAC roof air handler units have been installed and connections for the units are being installed. Interior wall framing including mechanical, electrical, and plumbing rough-ins is complete. Installation of gypsum wall board and interior insulation is complete. Ceiling Grid installation is on schedule. Built in shelving is on scheduled to be delivered and installed.
Work continues in the interior of the new addition with the installation of metal stud-framing for walls as well as mechanical, electrical, and plumbing installation. Taping and floating of these walls proceeds on schedule with painting to follow. Ceiling grid installation is in progress on the western half of the new addition. Fire alarm and technology wiring installation continues. Terrazzo corridor flooring proceeds on schedule. Restroom ceramic tile is complete.
The construction of the new Art Wing’s exterior walls is on schedule with the installation of exterior sheathing, damp proofing, and brick ties at the north wall, while south wall construction is complete. Brick veneer installation continues on schedule at the north wall. Built-up asphalt roofing continues as scheduled. Outdoor packaged air handling units have been installed and the tie-in of their connections continue. Site grading and sidewalk form work is in progress, with canopy installation following.
January 2018 Updates
Building controls are proceeding on schedule. Work continues in the interior of the new addition with the installation of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing rough-ins. Sheet-rock installation and terrazzo flooring at the corridors is complete. Door installation proceeds on schedule and temporary doors have been installed throughout. Painting of the interior walls is on schedule.
Learning Resource Center: Landscaping around the campus is complete with installation of sodding, shrubbery, and trees. All sidewalks, exterior lighting, and seeding are complete. The outdoor packaged air handling units have been installed and connections are complete, and the space has conditioned air. Building controls for the lighting and HVAC systems are proceeding on schedule with final adjustments underway. The interior carpet installation is complete with rubber base around the cabinets and walls. Final painting and final cleaning has been completed. Installation of technology equipment including projectors, wireless access points, and data ports is complete. The space has received occupancy permits from the City of Houston and the campus has completed furniture move in.
February 2018 updates
The construction of the new Art Wing’s exterior components which includes roofing, brick veneer, mechanical equipment, electrical equipment, and canopy installation are complete. The utility connections including gas, water, and electrical are complete for the new addition. The building automation controls are proceeding on schedule. Fire alarm and technology wiring installation continues. Ceiling grid installation is complete with lighting fixtures installed. Acoustical ceiling tile installation is proceeding on schedule. Vinyl tile flooring in the classrooms is complete. The laminate wall panel installation is complete. Restroom partitions, fixtures, and accessories are being installed nearing completion. The storefront door installation is complete. Painting of the interior walls is on schedule. The marker boards and tack boards installation is complete. The casework installation is proceeding on schedule.
March 2018 Updates
The building automation controls, fire alarm and technology wiring installation are complete. Acoustical ceiling tile installation is complete. Restroom partitions fixtures and accessories have been installed. The painting of the interior walls and casework installation is complete.
The Art Wing has been turned over to the school for student use. This completes Phase II of the Renovations and Addition for Carver High School.
