What is Texas? It is the second largest state in the U.S.A. Its state capitol is Austin. Texas used to be an independent nation before becoming part of the U.S.A. The Red River divides Texas, Oklahoma , and Arkansas. Texas is southeastern United States.

The location of Texas is in the Southern United States. The weather in the summer is normally 81 degrees. In the winter the weather is normally 48 degrees. The Gulf of Mexico lies to the southeast of Texas. East of Texas is Louisiana and Arkansas. New Mexico is to the southeast of Texas, and Oklahoma is to the north of Texas.

In 1996 there were 19,128,261 people living in Texas (1996 U.S estimate). The early tribes of Texas included Caddo, Jumano, and many more. 40 Million people visit Texas each year. Texans make goods from oil. They also make good food and machinery.

The state dish is chili. The state insect is the Monarch butterfly. The state plant is the Prickly Pear Cactus. The state sport is the Rodeo *where people ride on crazy bulls. The state fruit is the Red Grape. *State flag is down.

Texas is 261,232 square miles. Alaska is 570,641 Square miles. Therefore Alaska is approximately 309,409 square miles larger.
