Canning Vale Education Support Centre Newsletter 2nd July 2021

Principal's Message

Jodie Norwell, Principal.

Despite the restrictions and face masks in this last week, our students have not skipped a beat!

It has been another wonderful term of celebrating student achievements and I do hope you enjoy reading all about it in your child’s report.

Teachers will be in contact with you early next term to arrange IEP meetings and to discuss your child’ learning for Semester 2.

We value parent and carer’s contributions as an important part of each child’s education, so thankyou in advance for taking the time to meet with us.

A big congratulations to Mrs Siobhan Sweeney and the safe arrival of a little girl yesterday. We can’t wait to meet little Miss Susie Maire!

We hope you have a wonderful and safe holiday break.

A reminder that students return on Tuesday 20th July, 2021. Jodie Norwell, Principal.

AEIIP Classroom News

The students in the Early Intervention Kindy class have been working in groups of two to complete working in their reading, writing file and also to do independent work. The reading and writing file contains the following activities:

• Fluency: focusses on improving the speed of completing known skills such as matching, fine motor skills or labelling.

• Reading: students start by reading basic COMPIC books, then they begin sounding out simple CVC words made of the sounds ‘s’, ‘a’, ‘t’, ‘p’, ‘i’ and ‘n’. As they are more able, students then start reading phonic books and working on their comprehension.

• Fine Motor: activities such as colouring, cutting and gluing.

• Writing: includes working on imitating pre writing patterns that progresses to drawing along with tracing or copying their name.

We focus on developing fine motor skills during sessions at the round table doing playdough and during mat by imitating pre-writing patterns as well. Most of the students have shown improvement in a number of these skills recently. Nathanael is starting to do small amounts of colouring by himself. Arham is beginning to read COMPIC books using Proloquo2go and at times he can identify the correct button to press for bus, sandwich, chocolate and crocodile. Lucas is starting to develop better control and finger strength using playdough. Masha is doing more difficult gluing tasks by matching 4-5 items onto a picture. Joshua has started working towards cutting and gluing using school age worksheets. Rochelle Mulder, Teacher.

It's hard to believe that another school term has finished and we are halfway through the year. Congratulations to the Pre-Primary students in B8 who have been very busy this term achieving so many of their IEP goals that many new ones have been added. The students seem to enjoy the new board games, which have been introduced for the start of the day as a challenge for them.

The highlight of Thursday mornings is news telling. It is always interesting for the staff to see what is brought in to be shown. Many of the students have become more confident in telling their news, without the use of a visual cue and are practising to raise their hand to ask a question during this time.

Wishing everyone a happy and safe holiday break.

Julie Atkinson, Teacher.

B9 Classroom News

The end of term is closing in, and every child in B9 is thoroughly deserving of the mid-year break. This has been a sensational semester for every student in the B9 classroom.

In some way, every child has made substantial progress. Most are completing some or all of their daily routines independently. Eesa is engaging in parallel play. Lachlan, Oliver and Xin Ming are starting to use the Key Word Signs at different times during the days. Scarlett is completing matching activities with positional prompts and Diya is making good progress with her learning and should be very proud of her achievements given she only joined us in week three.

The teaching staff in B9 wish you all a happy holiday and hope that you are able to enjoy a safe and relaxing break with your children. Bob Beckman, Teacher.

H3 Classroom News

We have finally made it to the end of the semester and what a long one it has been. The students have done well to get through this 11-week term and I am sure they will make the most of their well-deserved rest. This term we have worked hard to finish our Literacy and Numeracy programs and have worked hard on our social skills.

The students enjoyed their visit from Harold the Giraffe from Life Ed and learnt some great ways that we can be good friends to our peers. We have had a great time in Science investigating different substances and creating sensory moments.

With the cold wet weather our time outside has been limited, so we have been making the most of the dry days and spending as much time outside of the classroom as we can, taking our learning outdoors. When indoors we have been getting in touch with our creative sides and indulging in art and sensory activities.

In the midst of this current pandemic it is more important than ever to keep your children at home if they have any cold/flu like symptoms, this includes cough, fever and running nose. If worried get tested. Stay safe over the holidays and we hope to see everyone well rested ready next term. Katrina Diconza, Teacher.

H4 Classroom News

What a great end to the semester! The students have finished swimming and completed and achieved so many of their goals, both personal and academic. A big thank you to the EAs, parents and students for making this term so successful. Looking forward to seeing what happens next semester with some changes happening to the delivery of content……. Watch this space!!!! Wishing you all an amazing sick free break and see you in Term 3! Dana Langridge, Teacher.

It has been a busy but enjoyable second half of the term for our students in H4 working hard to achieve their goals . In Maths, some students have learned to match and order days of the week and months of the year, looking at o’clock time and matching digital time Students are learning to identify their birthdays on a calendar.

In Science , they have enjoyed taking part in gardening and have helped water and care for the plants. We hope to harvest beans and carrots next term. They have learned about using various senses and participated in activities such as hearing loud and soft sounds and the student enjoyed listening to popcorn popping and of course tasting the popcorn was a welcome part of the activity. Students made healthy food choices as well like eating mandarins from the garden and red and green apples when offered during snack time.

Art time is fun where some students enjoy choosing colours and mixing them to make new colours and are proud of their creation.

Hope you all have a safe and pleasant holiday. Tena Ring Teacher.

B1 Classroom News

Our Community Access program over the last four weeks has been fantastic. It has been great to see our students show such enthusiasm and confidence as they work to achieve their goals. The program gives them opportunities to explore our wonderful city while they practice and develop independence, safe travel and social skills . Some of the highlights include our visit to Elizabeth Quay , Yagan Square, Westfield Carousel and WA Museum. The visit to the Museum was welcomed by our staff and students as they marveled at innovative ideas and interactive activities . We hope to visit again during the year so students will have the opportunity to explore.

I am thankful for the support offered by the wonderful staff at some of our public venues despite COVID-19 restrictions and in particular the Transperth staff who are always friendly and willing to offer their assistance each week making it a pleasant and positive experience for our students.

Wishing all the students in B1 a happy and safe holiday. Tena Ring, Teacher.

School Chaplain

This term we have been learning about keeping ourselves safe in protective behaviours. All the students in B9, H3 and H4 have done a wonderful job. Each student was presented with a completion certificate. H4 are showing theirs in this photo.
