This study casts doubt on two widely-held beliefs about the clergy sex abuse scandal that has afflicted the Catholic Church.
First, clergy sex abuse has not been completely controlled by the “Dallas Charter” adopted by the bishops in 2002. The study shows a disturbing recent increase in the number of incidents reported since 2010.
Second, the percentage of self-described homosexuals in the Catholic priesthood is correlated with incidence of sexual abuse of minors by the clergy.
This new study breaks new ground in its use of newly available data: data coded from the recently released Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report, data previously collected by the John Jay College of Criminal Justice (and graciously released by them for this analysis), and more recent reports collected under the terms of the Dallas Charter for Child Protection. This is also the first study to utilize data on the percentage of homosexual clergy, gathered by the Los Angeles Times in a 2002 survey.
