Must-Read Book Recommendations from America's Top Coaches and Athletes

The summer racing season may be over, but fall is a great time to keep improving as a sailor and a competitor. US Sailing asked a group of the top coaches and sailing athletes in America what books they read to stay sharp and motivated, while consistently making gains. Their enthusiastic responses showed just how important these books are to them, and how valuable it is to learn from the experiences of other sailors and athletes. Here are the books that they recommend:

Follow the Action: 2018 Youth Olympic Games

Cheer on the 2018 U.S. Youth Olympic Sailing Team as they compete at the Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018 on October 6-18, 2018. Held every four years, 2018 will mark the third edition of the Summer Youth Olympic Games, which are expected to include nearly 4,000 athletes from over 200 nations.

Team USA:

  • Windsurfing (Girls) – Techno 293 Plus: Dominique Stater (Miami, Fla.)
  • Windsurfing (Boys) – Techno 293 Plus: Manuel Nores (Miami Beach, Fla.)
  • Kitesurfing (Boys) – IKA Twin Tip Racing: Cameron Maramenides (Anna Maria, Fla.)
  • Two-Person Multihull (Mixed) – Nacra 15: Nicolas Martin (Houston, Texas) / AnaClare Sole (Houston, Texas)
These athletes have dedicated themselves to sport and their participation at an event like this rewards them for their training and overall efforts to become the best they can be. This team will learn more about the importance and significance of Olympic values, as they set sail for future goals and aspirations.” - Leandro Spina, US Sailing Olympic Development Director

2019 U.S. Youth Worlds Team Qualification System Announced

US Sailing has released details of the athlete selection system for the 2019 Youth Sailing World Championships, which will be held in Gdynia, Poland on July 13-19, 2019. In seven of the nine classes, the selection process will consist of two well-established domestic youth regattas.

Following the unprecedented success of the U.S. Youth Worlds Team at the 2018 Youth Worlds in Texas, America's top youth sailors are now setting their sites on the coming year. The 2018 US Team’s performance was dominant, winning four gold medals and a silver, as well as the Nations Trophy for the best overall performance.

“Rosie has a quote that she lives by: trust the process. Trust that the training and hard work that you’ve put in in the gym pays off. Trust yourself. I know how to start and go around the racecourse fast. The process brings confidence to the team.” - Charlotte Rose (2017 and 2018 Youth World Champion- Girls Laser Radial Class) speaking of coach Rosie Chapman

US Sailing National Championships for Junior Women

The U.S Junior Women's Singlehanded Championship for the Leiter Trophy and the U.S. Junior Women's Doublehanded Championship for the Ida Lewis Trophy are a unique blend of competition, coaching, and camaraderie. It's an opportunity you don't want to miss!

We asked the competitors, "What's the best thing about the U.S. Junior Women's Singlehanded and Doublehanded Championship?"

The ability to have access to higher level coaching and meeting new people. Life lessons learned in traveling and experiencing new places."
The yacht club, host families, and US Sailing Staff were outstanding."
My daughter was new to the Laser and jumped right in with this event. Everyone and everything about the event empowered her."
I would like to thank the Clagett Trust for their support of women’s youth sailing and for helping developing our future Olympians and sailors for life. The coaching was amazing, the competitors were tough, the girls were friendly on and off the water, and the management was better than any regatta I've been to. This was an amazing experience and I hope to come back next year!"

Article: What's your Sailors' Return on Investment?

Jim Taylor of SkiRacing offers an interesting insight into his experience as the parent of competitive youth athletes in the ski racing community.

Many parents have said: “I’ll bet you want them to be the next Mikaela Shiffrin and become rich and famous.” or “You want them to ski in college, don’t you?” Though both would certainly be nice, they are not the reason why I want my daughters to ski race. In either case, it’s not a ROI (Return on Investment) that ski racing parents should expect or even hope for." -Jim Taylor
