Sofia Jorgenson HL Visual Arts

The work in this exhibition represents an exploration of my theme of nature architecture and human architecture. I believe the nature and the architecture that surrounds us is so beautiful and is often taken for granted. Our lives are so busy and fast that we lack the time to stop and observe what surrounds us. In this series, I want to explore the beauty that is often not seen or absorbed in nature and architecture. To expand and create his theme and topic I explored four different mediums, photography, graphite, paint, and block printing.

With each medium I explored nature’s architecture through flowers or mountains and man made architecture by focusing on buildings and sometimes explored the two together in one piece.

Using acrylic paint as my first medium I created Lavender in the Park, I explored lavender as the main focus complimented by the sunset and buildings in the background to create a calming piece. In Painted Homes I focused solely on architecture by focusing on the geometric shapes of the houses and found the beauty that architecture can hold. I wanted to capture the detail that every building can hold. I then decided to focus on nature by creating Mountain serenity. I wanted to create a calming serene piece that captured the beauty of the mountains at sunset.

In my photography pieces, I explored the architecture I saw around me through balck and white and color photography. As I began my process I was not home and did not have the resources I needed readily available to me. I began to look through my camera roll of pictures of my travels through Europe and the East Coast. In this search, I found a total of ten color photographs and ten black and white photographs that I believed capture the beauty of human made architecture. Lastly, I found 3 flowers that I thought represented nature's architecture.

For my third medium, I focused on the detail in a single flower through my pieces Intricate Pedals. I wanted to show how intricate one flower can be. In my piece Metropolitan, I focused on geometric shapes to show the complexity of architecture.

Lastly, I used graphite to draw Florals. In this piece I wanted to capture the beauty of a single flower and how much detail one can hold.

Life goes by fast and if one doesn't take the time to stop and look around them, they will miss out on the beaty’s in life. I find that even simple actions such as walking my dog up to the park and watching the sunset allow me to enjoy the beauty that surrounds us on a day to day basis. As the audience views my exhibition I want to transport them to a space where they can digest nature and human made architecture beauty. I hope my pieces inspire people to take time to absorb what surrounds them and to realize beauty can come from nature’s architecture and man made architecture.

Lavender in the Park, Acrylic on Wood, Canvas 31x31cm

I wanted to capture the beauty of a lavender plant at the park. The houses in the middleground show the beauty of architecture, and the lavender, skyline and mountains play a role in nature’s beauty.

Painted Homes, Acrylic paint on wood canvas 25x25cm

In this piece, I wanted to capture something from home, San Francisco, and the beauty in architecture. I painted Victorian homes to represent San Francisco and did my best to capture the beauty and detail that is embedded in the architecture. Our fast moving lives prevent us from seeing the beauty that is readily around us. I hope this piece holds a sense of peace and beauty that the viewer can absorb.

Mountain Serenity, Acrylic paint on wood canvas 25x25

Nature surrounds us everyday, whether it's in flowers or trees and sometimes we fail to take the time to see it. In this piece, I wanted to capture the beauty that we do not always see through a set of mountains at sunset.

Garden Doors, Acrylic paint on canvas 2x 50x50cm

In this piece, I wanted to combine my two fascinations of nature and architecture. I drew a bluish green door from my grandparents house in Galicia from my childhood. I painted the leaves all around the painting, the bottom, sides, and top, to have nature encircle the door to make the two connect. I hope the viewer can find serenity in this piece. For my second door, I was inspired by Italy’s vibrant door colors and wanted to show the beauty that comes from vibrant colors, nature, and the architecture of the door and bricks.

Florals, Graphite on recycled drawing paper

In these pieces, I wanted to capture the beauty that a single flower can hold. While drawing, I used the absence of graphite to add depth and complement this with light and dark graphite shading to create a 2 dimensional flower. My favorite part of this piece is that the longer one looks at in the more detail one will notice.

The Cities we Build, Black and white photography on iPhone 22x28cm

For this piece, I was inspired by Eric de Maré, an architectural black and white photographer.I wanted to investigate man-made beauty through architecture. I captured photos from San Francisco to Madrid, Oakland, New York City, Boston, Providence, Madrid, and Galicia. I was fascinated by the different shapes on the buildings through bricks, columns, balconies and angles. I wanted to capture the beauty of architecture that is readily around us on a daily basis.

Color Cities, Color photography on iPhone 22x28cm

Inspired by the architecture around me, I wanted to capture the beauty that it holds. I was inspired by the structure of the buildings, the bricks, the windows and how they all came together to create beautiful architecture.

3 flowers, Color photography on iPhone 22x28cm

I was inspired by 3 vibrant flowers I found while walking my dog to the park. I hope this piece encourages others to notice the beautiful nature around them.

Wallpaper Petals, Block print on paper 30x67cm

I layered flower upon flower to create this piece. From afar, it is hard to see what is on the page, but as one stops and looks closer one can see the detail within each print. I hope this inspires others to stop and observe the beauty around them in their day to day lives.

Intricate Petals, Block print on paper 2x 30x67

Evey print came out different. Each flower is unique and detailed just like the nature around us. I hope this inspired people to see the beautiful nature that surrounds them.

Metropolitan, Block print on paper 20x22 cm

Inspired by Pablo Picasso’s cubism and Kathë Kollwitz’s block printing I combined the two styles to create this piece. I wanted to show the complexity of architecture with all its different shapes and angles.
