Foreword
DigItaly is about resilience.
As the SARS-COV-2 crisis seems to slow down our busy lives once again into the gloomy paralysis of a lockdown, the aim of DigItaly is to transform the harsh impact of the pandemic on our usual structures into an opportunity to reinvent ourselves through the challenge of innovating our methods.
I would like to stress especially the fact that the aim is to ‘innovate’ and not to ‘adapt’: this means that we will not merely react to the forced digital nature of most interaction in these times, but we want to convert it into a key advantage.
Session theme
“Bridging the divides: digital, wealth, health, gender, educational”
Inequalities in our society have been on the rise for many years under a variety of different aspects.
The widening socioeconomic gap among high-income and medium-low-income classes has resulted in extremely serious consequences in areas such as educational opportunities and medical care access, with the pandemic especially casting a light on that element.
At the same time, not only has the covid-19 crisis further exacerbated those divides, but it has also led to the risk of erosion of womens’ rights, given several socio-cultural factors in some Member States, as well as to a digital transition not occurring in an inclusive way, as significant portions of citizens still do not have equal access to online services.
With the possibility of rebuilding Europe on the basis of new paradigms and objectives, Bridging the Divides should be key in the long-term vision. That is why I want to highlight its substantial importance by focussing on this theme at DigItaly - 1st Digital Session of EYP Italy! I sincerely hope that DigItaly can provide interesting food for thought for all participants, that will be able to come up with their own ideas on how to bring more equity into our society.
The session
I would like to decline the session theme not only in the academic field, but in the true texture of the session structure, namely in three ways.
Firstly, by bridging the physical divide that separates all of us. To do so, I would like to build a fun and inclusive environment, where the social aspect of the event receives as much care and attention as the academic programme, and it aims at fostering interaction both intra- and inter-teams.
Secondly, by bridging the divide between delegates and officials, to make sure that the two groups of participants have the opportunity to fully engage with each other, especially with a view on trying to make sure that as many delegates as possible feel the desire to remain engaged with the EYP.
In times such as the one we are living, offering a platform where young people have the chance to share their views on how our future should look like is of utmost importance.
The third way in which I would like to bridge the divide within the own structure of the session is by flattening the gap between Head Organiser and Organisers. I aim at achieving this by having a multi-layered structure within the team: indeed, there will be two Core-Organisers and four Organisers.
Each Core-Organiser will work together with two Organisers, creating a sub-unity that will have full ownership on specific aspects of the session. In this way, we will make sure that everyone within the Organisers’ team can have the chance to effectively shape the event, and is not bound to merely execute assigned tasks.
