February 3, 2017 A focus on Literacy

This week we have really jumped into our two new reading and writing units. In reading we are doing Historical Fiction book clubs, and in writing we are working on Literary Essays. Both of these units require a lot of deep thinking and hard work. I'm so impressed with what your students have come up with so far!

In both reading and writing we have been closely reading our texts. One activity we did was with a picture book called Fox by Margaret Wild. We learned about taking margin notes, and then we wrote about our ideas. In the photos above and, we all thought about why Margaret wild would choose to use the word 'gentle' to describe a dogs mouth.

Our Current Read Aloud

Number the Stars by Lois Lowry is set during 1943 and follows a ten-year-old girl, Annemarie, and her best friend, Ellen Rosen who live in Denmark during the Nazi invasion across Europe. It is a touching story told through the eyes of a courageous and curious young child. Of course, the children and their families are fictional, but the time period is not. It is a poignant story of innocence and strength that takes place on the streets of Copenhagen and nearby towns. This is a classic book that fourth graders across the country are reading, I have multiple copies if you'd like to borrow one and read along with us!
