Boston College completed its second practice of preseason camp Saturday morning inside Fish Field House and outside on the Chamberlin Practice Field. The Eagles hit the field for the second day of the NCAA acclimatization period with just helmets.
BC will be able to throw on the shoulder pads for Sunday’s practice.
“Today, for day two, I thought both sides of the ball started to get in a groove,” said BC head coach Steve Addazio.
One critical area the Eagles were able to improve the depth and talent level for the 2019 team during the off-season was the addition of five graduate transfers. BC added Temple place-kicker Aaron Boumerhi, Penn State tight end Danny Dalton, Miami (Fla.) offensive lineman Hayden Mahoney, Rhode Island offensive lineman Dwayne Scott and Clemson defensive end Richard Yeargin. In addition, Davidson transfer Zion Johnson joined the team in the spring and will have two years of eligibility remaining.
“For us, I am looking for high character guys who are looking for the right situation,” Addazio said about adding graduate transfers. “This year, we have utilized it and added a few transfers in here. These guys can play.”
Boumehri will join the team next week after finishing course work at Temple and will have two years of eligibility remaining as a graduate transfer. Dalton also has two years of remaining eligibility after a strong first two days with BC.
Boumehri comes to Chestnut Hill after a successful career at Temple. He entered 2018 as Temple’s 10th-all-time leading scorer with 147 points and seventh in career field goals made with 30. He appeared in two games last season before suffering a season-ending injury. He earned All-AAC honors as a true freshman in 2016 after connecting on 15-of-17 field goals, including a long of 48 yards. As a sophomore in 2017, he was 15-of-23 on field goal attempts with a long of 52 yards. He booted a career long 49-yard field goal to beat Villanova earning his AAC Special Teams player of the week honors in 2018 and followed that up a week later by kicking a career-long 52-yard field goal against UMass.
Dalton returns home to his native Massachusetts after spending three years at Penn State. He appeared in three games for the Nittany Lions last season. The 2015 Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year, he finished his scholastic career as Marshfield’s all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. He was a Boston Globe and Boston Herald All-Scholastic choice as a junior and senior.
Mahoney heads to the Heights after four years at the University of Miami. The Pennsylvania product served as one of Miami’s top offensive linemen in 2018, seeing action in all 12 games and making nine starts. He played in 25 games over his final two seasons with the Hurricanes, making 11 starts.
Scott was a three-year starter for Rhode Island at center and missed just one game during his career. He provides BC with another quality option at center behind redshirt sophomore Alec Lindstrom.
Yeargin comes to BC after four seasons at Clemson. He missed all of the previous two seasons due to a neck injury suffered in an automobile accident. Prior to his injury, Yeargin was a steady reserve for the Tigers, including 29 tackles, five TFLs, 1.5 sacks, five quarterback pressures in 336 snaps over his 22-game career.
