Common ingredients in Latvian recipes are found locally, such as potatoes, wheat, barley, cabbage, onions, eggs and pork. One of latvia's interesting food is Red currant semolina mousse. It is made from semolina,(manna) and red currant porege.

Latvia's independence was interrupted from June–July 1940, when the country was occupied and incorporated into the Soviet Union. In 1941 it was invaded and occupied by Nazi Germany, then reconquered by the Soviets from 1944–45.

Andris Biedriņš is a Latvian professional basketball player who last played for the Utah Jazz of the National Basketball Association. He was drafted by the Golden State Warriors with the 11th overall selection in the 2004 NBA draft.
