Matt Elementary School is located in northwest Forsyth County. We are part of the outstanding Forsyth County Schools district and are proud to be in the West Community of schools. We serve approximately 1,300 students in grades K-5. Matt Mariners are “Anchored in Joy” and we strive to provide every student with a balanced education that includes high academic standards, opportunities for social-emotional growth, and skills that prepare students for a lifetime of success. Teachers provide exceptional instruction in reading, math, social studies, and science. Every student participates in specials classes that include Art, Music, PE, STEM, Science, Counseling, and Technology. Matt Elementary believes that the best part of education is finding joy in learning and having students that are excited to come to school each day. We believe that children thrive when they feel safe, loved and respected. Our greatest joy is found in the smiles and hearts of our students.
Matt Elementary opened in 2001 with approximately 600 students. It was named after the original Matt Elementary, which was located on Bannister Road. The “Old Matt” school was named after the Matt community, which was named after Matison Martin. The original Matt school held 75 students in multiple grades. Rather than desks, students sat on slab benches around an open fireplace. Their drinking water came from a nearby spring and students walked to school. Ms. Mary Harwell was the first principal of the new Matt Elementary. The school was a new design concept (the same as Cumming Elementary) and was built to relieve overcrowding in north-west Forsyth County.
The Forsyth County Schools Learner Profile is the work of our school district. It is displayed in every classroom. The Learner Profile lists the attributes we expect all students to possess by the time they graduate from one of our high schools. This profile keeps student learning at the heart of all decision-making.
At Matt Elementary, our discipline framework is centered around a proactive, preventative approach that establishes behavioral supports and social culture needed for ALL students. The goal is to achieve social, emotional and academic success, so students are expected to be safe, act responsibly, inspire others, and lead respectfully.

We value and emphasize high-quality literacy instruction. Our teachers implement this through rigorous instruction that is student-centered and personalized to meet all children's individual needs.
In a typical literacy block, you may see students enjoying a read-aloud, reading books of their choice independently, conferring with their teacher to work on goals, researching, writing, or participating in literature circles.
At Matt, we believe that quality math instruction will equip students to be real-life problem solvers. Students gain a deeper understanding through exploration, application, discussion, and feedback.
In a typical math block, you may see students participating in number talks, working in groups, engaged in a Dreambox lesson on a computer, or using hands-on strategies to solve real-world problems.
Matt PTO is organized for the purpose of supporting the education of children at Matt Elementary School by fostering relationships among the school, the parents, and the teachers. This support is fulfilled by planning, organizing, and executing events and programs which generate resources and community for our school.
