Six days earlier, Jesus had taken his disciples to Caesarea Philippi, a place renowned for the worship of false gods. He had asked them, "Who do people say I am?" and affirmed that He was indeed the messiah, the Son of God. He announced that soon he would be persecuted, killed, and on the third day rise again from the dead. He taught about discipleship and of a day of final judgement. He spoke of the coming of his kingdom. (Matthew 16:13-28)
"And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves."
