"Word Glide Guide" Matthew 17:1-19 A Preview and Introduction to Sunday's scripture Reading

Matthew 17:1-9

The Transfiguration

"And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. 3 And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. 4 And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 5 He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. 7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.” 8 And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. 9 And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.” (Mt 17:1–9, ESV)

Six Days Before This Event

Six days earlier, Jesus had taken his disciples to Caesarea Philippi, a place renowned for the worship of false gods. He had asked them, "Who do people say I am?" and affirmed that He was indeed the messiah, the Son of God. He announced that soon he would be persecuted, killed, and on the third day rise again from the dead. He taught about discipleship and of a day of final judgement. He spoke of the coming of his kingdom. (Matthew 16:13-28)

"And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves."
Mt. Tabor - the traditional site of the transfiguration.
"Peter" ("Rock") is the name Jesus gave to Simon Bar-Jona, a fisherman who Jesus called to follow him as a disciple. He became an apostle and leader of the early church. The brothers James and John were also fishermen who followed Jesus' call to become "fishers of men." Jesus nicknamed them "Sons of Thunder." In addition to the transfiguration, these three disciples were with Jesus, separate from the full 12 disciples, when He raised Jairus' daughter (Mark 5:37), on the Mount of Olives (Mark 13:3), and in the Garden of Gethsemane (Matt 26:37).
"And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light."

"Transfigured" = μεταμορφόω (metamorphoō), change into another form or image, transform.

As in "metamorphosis"
He was transfigured... His face shone like the sun... His clothes became white as light.
"And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him."
Moses - "The great leader and lawgiver through whom God brought the Hebrews out of Egypt, constituted them a nation for his service, and brought them within reach of the land promised to their forefathers." ("Moses," New Bible Dictionary, 1996)
Elijah - "Traditionally held to be the greatest Hebrew prophet." He stood against the Canaanite and Phoenician worship of false Gods. (The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church, 2005)

"And Peter said to Jesus, 'Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.' He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, 'This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.'

"This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him."
"When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified."

"But Jesus came and touched them, saying...

“Rise, and have no fear.”

"And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only."

"And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, 'Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.'"
