The Era of Good Feelings What did it mean to be an American in the early 1800's ?

Being an American in the 1800’s was a lot different than today. African Americans had no freedom nor rights. For some, they had pride in their country and were free.

Early American Art

Americans bought back European art traditions but started to develop their own artistic traditions. Folk Art was mainly used during the Era of Good Feelings. Not everyone had to be a professional artist to create art. A Woman usually made quilts and men made hunting decoys and carved weather vanes. Professional artists would usually spend their time painting portraits, landscapes, nature or the west. I chose this painting of Paul Revere because a lot of artists painted portraits in The Era of Feelings.

Early American Music

Music expressed Americans national identity. The types of music in the Era of Good Feelings was Spiritual, Minstrel, Patriotic and classical. Music was mostly played in Ballrooms and churches. Some songs were played outside of churches but with different lyrics. The Star-Spangled Banner came from an old English tune but has different lyrics. In the North, they played classical music that originated from Europe. In the South slave's combined hymns ( religious songs) from white churchgoers and African music styles which created Spirituals. I chose this painting because it shows people dancing in a ballroom, where music was mostly heard.“ Weel about and turn about and do jis so Ebery time I weel about I jump Jim Crow.”- Thomas Dartmouth Rice.

Early American Literature

Some people had different opinions on literature back in the early 1800’s but literature was a big hit. The writer's started to use interesting American subjects or settings to create their stories. Washington Irving was one the first to achieve literature fame by drawing his colorful tales on “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”. Another significant Writer was Davy Crockett. He wrote all his tales off of his life of a hunter and a frontiersman etc. I chose this photo of Davy Crockett because his speech and rough humor influenced a new American accent for literature.“ Who has no education, can read with difficulty, has no property, no fixed residence, but passes his life hunting, selling his game to live and dwelling continuously in the woods.” - Alexis de Tocqueville.

James Monroe had become president in 1816. James Monroe's presidency was known as the Era of Good Feelings. The Federal Government wanted to take a more active role in building a national economy. A man named Henry Clay of Kentucky believed that America's future laid in Capitalism. Americans could distribute their goods for profit. Clay supported economic plan called the American System. The American System has taxed imports, federally funded transportation projects, and a new national bank. I chose this photo of the White House because it is an American symbol and America represents capitalism. “ Let us act under a settled conviction, and an habitual feeling, that these twenty-four states are one country.”- Daniel Webster.

Argument: the era of good feelings

Slaves would not call this “The Era Of Good Feelings”. The reason why because they were treated badly. They couldn’t anything, couldn’t earn money, couldn’t get married etc. Freed blacks in the south basically weren’t even free, they had to be controlled and a colored person was really never free. Freed blacks in the north were treated unequally. To them, this wasn’t “The Era of good Feelings”. They didn’t feel good, they felt horrible.
