LES News March Newsletter

A Note from the Principal...

I hope that everyone had a relaxing Spring Break and enjoyed their time away. The building remodeling project is in full swing. The construction crews started on the kitchen and main office this past week. It is so exciting to see this transformation of our school and I look forward to next year seeing the students' excitement when they see the building next school year!

Well, Spring is here, which means the next two months are full of learning, activities, testing, and end of the year fun! This newsletter provides a lot of information on upcoming activities.

Important Information

LES Traffic Pattern Changing After Spring Break

This is a reminder that beginning April 1st, the traffic pattern at the elementary will be changing. There will be no access to the main entrance of the building. We will be using Door B (east entrance) as the main door for the remainder of the school year. Please have students ready to exit the cars when dropping them off so that we can keep the car line moving. Cars will have to stay in line and will not be able to pull out of line once they drop off. If someone else picks up/drops off your child at school, please communicate this new procedure with them so they are aware. Please see the letter below that explains the new process in more detail.

Preschool Open House

Any child who will be 4 years old by August 1st has the opportunity to attend Lion's Den Preschool for the upcoming school year. We will be hosting an Open House on Wednesday, April 10th from 6:00 PM-7:00 PM at Loogootee Elementary. You will be able to register for the 2019-2020 school year, and staff will be available to answer any questions you may have. We hope to see you there!

ILEARN Testing Coming Soon

Each school year, 3rd and 4th grade students are required to participate in state testing. In previous years, this test has been known as the ISTEP+ Test. This year that test name and format has changed. The test is now called the ILEARN. The ILEARN test measures student achievement and growth according the the Indiana Academic Standards. This test is given one time per year. The testing window opens April 22nd and closes May 17th. We will begin testing the week of April 29th. The link below provides more information regarding the assessment. More information regarding the test will be sent home closer to testing time.

Join Us for Family Fun Night!

Come join us for Family Fun Night on Wednesday, April 17th. The Open House will take place from 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Loogootee Elementary. The evening will be filled with crafts, snacks, games, stories and prizes. We hope to see you there!

LES Spotlight

Kindergarten Fun!

Over the last month, our kindergarten students have been doing some exciting work. At the beginning of the month, they started as doctors performing vowel surgery. Students become surgeons to help save their patients by finding the correct vowel that was missing in each word.

Later in the month, students became paleontologists for the day after recently learning about dinosaurs. The students dug for fossils (chocolate chips), created fossils in play doh, read about dinosaurs, and made a dinosaur craft.

Third Graders Complete Annual Book Project

Third grade students completed the annual book report project in term 3. In January, students were given a list of ideas of how their ‘not-so-traditional’ book report could be presented, but were encouraged to get creative in how they wanted to share their information. They also had a short list of ‘requirements’ that their project had to include, such as main characters, author, and their opinion of the book. The students read their books on their own and worked on their projects at home. Just before break, students displayed them in the hallway. The third grade students did an outstanding job on their projects and earned a pizza party for the entire grade for their hard work put into their projects!
