Community Safety News APRIL 2019 EDITION

The Community Safety Newsletter aims to keep residents informed about what the Community Safety Partnership has been involved with in Chiltern and South Bucks districts in the last month.

Burglar Alarm Companies List

Around 60% of burglaries carried out on homes fitted with burglar alarms are unsuccessful. This suggests that burglar alarms are a useful deterrent for opportune criminals.

The British Security Industry Association suggests that householders use a professional alarm installation company registered with a police recognised 'alarm inspectorate.' Ask to see your security company's registration documents, and look for the following accreditation:

  • SSAIB - Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board
  • NSI - National Security Inspectorate

You can find a list of local burglar alarm companies taken from the SSAIB and NSI on our websites: www.chiltern.gov.uk/homesecurity www.southbucks.gov.uk/homesecurity

CSE Awareness Day

The National Child Sexual Exploitation Awareness Day was on 18th March. We showed our support with our #HelpingHands.

Hotels across all districts in Buckinghamshire are being encouraged to support the Hotel Watch Scheme which is aimed at preventing child sexual exploitation and raising awareness to the signs that may point towards abuse taking place with the 'SAY something if you SEE something' catchline.

Buckinghamshire Domestic Abuse Champions Network

The latest figures from the Crime Survey for England and Wales show in the year ending March 2018, an estimated 2.0 million adults aged 16 to 59 years experienced domestic abuse in the last year (1.3 million women, 695,000 men).

Research also tells us that victims can go to as many as five agencies before they find appropriate help, advice and support, in Buckinghamshire we aim to dramatically reduce this number. By having a Domestic Abuse (DA) Champions Network across many agencies the aim is to provide a more joined up approach, with professionals having a common understanding of a victims issues and the ability to co-ordinate their efforts and work more efficiently to ensure their safety.

There are now 12 champions trained to deliver the DA Champions Training, including one of our Community Safety Officers. If you would like to help support victims of DA you can become a Champion for free by enrolling onto the training via the below website:

Safe Car Wash app

As with other sensitive safeguarding issues, Modern Slavery is hidden, secret and subversive. Prevention relies heavily on ordinary people going about their daily lives picking up the signals that all is not well and reporting it to the relevant authorities.

Many hand car washes are legitimate businesses, but some of them are not. People are being forced to work long hours, for little or no pay, and under threat of violence in hand car washes. You could help by downloading the 'Safe Car Wash' app and report anything you feel suspicious.

You will be asked a few simple questions about what you have seen and experienced e.g. Do workers have access to suitable clothing? How much did you pay? If there is a likelihood of modern slavery, you'll be asked to call the Modern Slavery Helpline on 08000 121 700 to tell them what you've seen. The helpline is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You can also report it to Thames Valley Police online or call 101 at any time to report an incident. Always call 999 if there is a crime in action or immediate threat to life.
