What were main events, people, and political views during this time?

The Civil War occured during the time that Mark Twain was writting this book. People had either the view of slaves or no slaves. The book how ever was written pre-Civil War times. The Industrial Revolution and extreme contacts between rich and poor also occured during that time.

How did Twain’s stories comment on society, the government, and the world?

Twain believed slavery was wrong and that white people owed black people reparations. He focused on the common people when writing and not himself or the rich people. Mark Twain did with his writing like Mathew Brady, Alexander Gardner did with their photography. They showed honest photographic record of the Civil War.
