VIETNAM TRIP It has been a huge couple of weeks (almost) but an extremely enjoyable and fulfilling time as our school hosted our visitors and friends from Hanoi. There have been so many highlights to note, and so many people to thank. We loved hearing the tales on Saturday night of the adventures our host families got up to with their international students – Melbourne Zoo, Sovereign Hill, Lego Land, Scienceworks, Melbourne Star, Coburg Farmers’ Market and food festivals were just some of the attractions visited. We give special thanks to our host families for taking on this huge responsibility of hosting for a night and making our Hanoi visitors feel extra special. The weekend saw us spending the day at Luna Park on Sunday, and Chesterfield Farm on Monday, and we visited Healesville Sanctuary during the week as well. Gill, Patrick and I have got to know the students and staff extremely well during their stay, and thank you to the classes and teachers who have taken in an extra couple of students and immersed them in classes and lessons that ‘Aussie’ kids do. Thank you to our caterers, led by Chris Andreou, who have ensured our visitors have been well fed during their stay, to our ESS staff who always go above and beyond their stated duties in supporting us and making sure every little detail is taken care of, to our own Vietnamese families who provided special food and attention, and to everyone who assisted in one way or the other in making this visit such a success. We bid farewell to our visitors on Sunday morning as they head to Sydney on route to Ho Chi Minh City and then Hanoi next Thursday. We have appreciated the friendship and support of Ms. Phuong, Mr. Tuan, Ms Thuy, Ms Kim and Mr Bac and we hope to see all of you when we visit late in 2020.

And on that note, we will advise early in Term 3 of an Information Evening where the proposal to take 15 students to Vietnam in 2020 will be outlined. Watch this space!!

THREE WAY CONFERENCES AND VARIATION TO SCHOOL DAY There have been plenty of notices to date, but just to reiterate that Wednesday, June 26 is a student reporting day, with three way conferences being conducted throughout the day from 11am until 7pm. School Council has approved this variation to school times, and we ask that your children attend only for the purposes of participation in the student conferences. They will be marked present on the day. Out of school hours care is available for those who need to take up this option.

CHESS TOURNAMENT Today we hosted the first of two chess tournaments we commit to hosting each year. 144 students from more than a dozen schools were ferried here to compete, with plenty of tables and chairs set up in the gymnasium. We also host again in September (week 9), and we hope that all who participated had a great day

SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING The June School Council Meeting has been re-scheduled to Tuesday, June 18 although the starting time of 7pm remains the same. The Finance Committee will meet at 6pm on the same night.

PLANNING WEEK Just a reminder that next week is Planning week at our school with timetable alterations to allow teams a full day planning in preparation for Term 3.

MATERNITY LEAVE WISHES I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the whole school community, to wish Sally Ruddock and her partner all the best for their upcoming parenthood! Sally leaves to take maternity leave as of tomorrow, Friday, June 14. We know you will be a wonderful mum, Sally! Colleen Ottrey, who is well known to the Foundation to Grade 2 students, takes up the position in Foundation R ‘officially’ on Monday, having spent a few days in transition this week. We welcome Colleen back to the fold and know she will do a wonderful job filling the shoes (and she has so many!) of Sally.

That’s it from me this week. I hope you have a lovely week.

Kind regards,

Bill Kersing

Principal

PLANNING WEEK Next week (June 17 - 21) will be planning week across the school.

Throughout the week all classroom teachers will be timetabled to spend a whole day planning for Term 3, along with the other teachers in their team. Specialist teachers also receive time throughout the week to plan for the following term. Teachers meet together to reflect and provide feedback on the learning that has occurred across this term, discuss student data that has been collected and use this information to form future planning.

The teaching and learning for Term 3 will be discussed and planned, with planners being developed for English and Mathematics. Inquiry units, will be also be reviewed and planned. Common assessment tasks will also be documented and excursions and in school activities researched and booked.

Planning Week allows our staff the opportunity to engage in professional discussions and develop the rich, differentiated learning programs that allow our students to engage fully in their learning.

Teaching teams will plan on the following days with students having specialist lessons for the day:

  • Monday- Year 4,
  • Tuesday – Year 6,
  • Wednesday – Year 5 and Year 2,
  • Thursday – Year 3 and Foundation,
  • Friday – Year 1.

Have a great week

Mrs Nicholls

The last week and a half has certainly been a busy time for our Vietnamese visitors. Here is a snapshot of their adventures.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED FOR THE VBPS UPCOMING PRODUCTION We are in the process of organising costumes for all Viewbank students to wear at our 2019 Production – VMTV. Some of these costumes are being made by our amazing and talented costume coordinator Kathryn Harvey, who is a mum of two of our students at VBPS.

Kathryn would love some help and assistance with many jobs such as cutting fabric, sewing, overlocking and sorting. You do not need to be a sewer or own any of the equipment needed. However, if you can provide help with any job big or small, we would sincerely appreciate your assistance.

If you are able to volunteer some time or help Kathryn with some of these jobs, please contact the production team.

Many thanks,

Renee Davey, Jenni Hall & Kathryn Harvey
