Deception NINE SENSES?

DECEPTION; Nine Senses: According to Merriam-Webster.com (2017), Deception, a form of communication, is defined as "the act of causing someone to accept as true or valid what is false or invalid".

Dictionary.com (2017) has the concept of Deception originating somewhere between 1400 and 1450 AD; late Middle English, Old French and late Latin era. The fact that a date for the term "deception' was actually given a term date is in itself a lie. We as humans have been deceiving ourselves since the beginning of time. We just call it something different these days. Life experience has taught me that deception comes in many forms. It can be viewed as a selfish act that benefits a person or body of persons. Common uses of deception are financial gain, identity theft, advertising sales, infidelity, personal gain and persuasion.

Deception can also be

INTENTIONAL LIES: Studies have shown that an average person lies several times a day. An article in www.LiveScience.com (May 15, 2006) called, "Why We Lie", by Michael Loyd stated that, "Men lie no more than women, but they tend to lie to make themselves look better, while women are more likely to lie to make the other person feel better. Extroverts tend to lie more than introverts...We're trying not so much to impress other people but to maintain a view of ourselves that is consistent with the way they would like us to be..." According to ChangingMinds.org (2017), lies can be defined in colors. The most popular color being the "White Lie". Depending on your personality this particular lie is usually meant as a benefit for the other person. Many times we find it necessary to control the outcome through peaceful means. The most common lie, the "Grey Lie" is usually intended as a benefit for both you and someone else. Have you ever tried to avoid an uncomfortable conversation or agree to disagree? The Grey Lie can intentionally be used as a low key deception tactic for diffusion or misdirection. The "Black Lie", however, is meant to be more negative in nature. The objective is that others gain nothing while you alone gain the benefit. If the intent is fueled with bad intentions then this type of deception can potentially be very harmful to others. The "Red Lie" is the most harmful of all. Its sole intent is to, piss someone off, gain dominance over another, inflict revenge or lasting psychological pain. GRAPHOLOGY: The art of cursive writing is arguably no longer common place. Printing seems to be more common place in today's society. The only time I literally write in cursive is when I sign my name on the dotted line. My hand written alphabetical skills have basically evolved into two unbroken wavy lines that only I can recognize. However, if you were to show my signature to a graphologist they would literally be able describe my personality on a piece of paper without ever seeing me. Doctors, celebrities and professional athletes are famous for unrecognizable signatures. There's a common law enforcement term known as a "perishable skills" that can be applied to writing. Basically it's a use it or lose it concept. In other words if I don't write cursive on a consistent basis I will eventually lose my unique written skill set all together. Without consistency you may find yourself either regressing back to your fifth grade level of handwriting or evolve into a broken scribble. In terms of deception, I have found it more difficult to deceive others through writing. Graphology enables a trained individual to determine the personality traits of the person's writing thereby confirming or denying the authenticity of the messenger. Very much like a finger print identifies a person through their unique lines.

SOCIAL MEDIA: Change in what society considers normal is both inevitable and to some extent necessary. Today, people of all ages seem to have an opinion on an endless number of subject matters. Social media has now provided multiple sources of digital, filtered and visual manipulation. Code School's open doors to new ways of learning. They combine high-quality video, gaming, and in-browser coding in such a way that it makes learning fun and exciting. In the Middle East I witnessed young males learning similar techniques through games where the enemy was the United States military. Most young people have no clue about they want to specialize in life. As we speak you can be viewed online as a CEO of a prominent company, a police officer or a porn addict all at the same time. People of all ages have found a way to compete on the same level where digital deception is commonly accompanied with audio and video filters. I now cover my video port on my computer screen in order to avoid someone from looking at me or recording me without my consent. Technology has created the biggest and most popular form of deception this world has ever known.

VIDEO: Video format's are often embedded with subliminal messages and/or innuendo's. Sometimes I find it difficult to tell the difference between what is real and what is manufactured. For example older people often describe themselves online as younger and more attractive while younger people often described themselves as more mature and appealing. There is current technology out there that can actually manipulate the movements, sounds and facial expressions of a person without their knowledge. A simple image on a computer can be extracted without authorization while a person is asleep or preoccupied. In a matter of minutes someone can actually create a fraudulent video of a person creating a felony or saying something they never actually said. Unfortunately the power of deception on the world wide web has often led to harmful decisions. It can be as harmful as sending a Dear John letter to a spouse serving over seas in the military only to come home and find out that it was all a lie. In that instance many military personnel will re-up continuously avoid coming home, return home with leathal intentions or commit suicide. All of these instances can be considered a result of deception and unwarranted perception leading to psychological pain.

VERBAL: The ability to answer a question without answering takes practice. If you can become really good at it, chances are the other person will move on to the next question. Lawyers and politicians are trained experts at this technique. Getting into a heated argument with someone one minute and then having a drink with them the next is common place within this circle. One could argue that this form of communication is more of an avoidance technique than deceptive technique. Law enforcement encourages officers to learn the method of verbal judo in order to lead someone into a place of exposure. If you are good, you can find out information from someone without having to read them their rights prior to an arrest. Normally when you have two or more detainee's you separate them for questioning in order to compare stories later. The next step is pairing them up in the back of a patrol vehicle alone with a recorder on in the front seat. They often tend to formulate a deceptive strategy and quickly corroborate an acceptable story. Somewhere within the conversation much of the truth will usually be revealed. State v. Smith, 641 So.2d 849 (Fla. 1994) the Eleventh Circuit Court concluded that "a person does not have a reasonable expectation of privacy in a police car and that any statements intercepted therein may be admissible as evidence." At the very least you may be able to form "probable cause" to further pursue evidence or further questions leading to a possible arrest. In essence you are using in-direct deception as a tool to confuse the deceiver. By contrast, I am proud to admit that I grew up in a time where an element of respect and dignity was still considered the norm in society. In my early childhood the cell phone, the internet and the computer were not yet available. Your word meant something and you were often forced to unknowingly use more body language to convince someone of a story. In many cases parents could easily notice the difference between your words and your body language. Having to look serious, elated or persuading came natural to some. While others with low self-esteem struggled at the attempt to stretch the truth. Then there were parents like mine, my mom in particular, that would double check my room to see if I was asleep, go out and find me when I wasn’t there, and pull me out of a slumber party in front of my friends. So, if you had a choice of which type of deception you would rather endure, which would it be? In my experience, good old fashion values can never be replaced. As it turned out I managed to get over my humiliation in front of my friends. There was no evidence to re-emerge or share with the world. I was not deceived by a stranger. The thought of having to return to school and face the bullies that crushed my character online would embarrass me to no end.

MUSIC VIDEO’S: I have always loved music. Music often brings me to tears. I appreciate the sound of a beautiful voice. That is until I see the music video version of a song. In more cases than not I find that I am disappointed in the visual message that the video projects. Maybe I’m old school, but the video message often goes off into a stereotypical sexual mini movie. I appreciate musicians and how they groove with the lead singer. Unless you are a Sade type singer. She is a visual dominance that has music wrapped around her. Other types of songs incorporate the entire band where the musician energy make the video. The singer pulls the video together with the groove and movement of the band. It’s like the heart of the music makes everyone move with the beat of your favorite instrument.
