TELL YOUR STORY

"Enjoy the little things in life... for one day you'll look back and realize they were the big things." - Kurt Vonnegut

I believe that everyone just wants to be seen!

I have always had an interest in the dynamics of trust and vulnerability. At best, it can reveal a unique connection, a kind of truth that would otherwise not be foregrounded.

When a human being connects with another and - even if for a split second - relinquishes a certain level of control, it is fascinating that complete strangers can share an alternate truth about themselves that was hidden not only to others, but perhaps even to themselves.

As a photographer, these are the moments I'm after. Stories of connection that reveal themselves in a single glance or over a period of years.

What is family documentary photography?

This is how your life looks....let me help you see it!

"Family Documentary Photography" or "Family Photojournalism" is unscripted, un-posed, non-directed photography of everyday family life (and by “family”, I mean everything from the traditional mom/dad/kids to best friends to partners to boyfriends to roommates - whatever “family” means to you). I record what happens naturally.

I come to your home, or meet you at the park or the beach or at brunch or wherever you choose, and take photos as you and your family or friends interact, just as you would on a day when a photographer was not present.

The marvels of daily life are exciting. No movie director can arrange your life any more perfectly than you can.

I want these photos to capture the true essence of your family, your relationships, and the stage of life you are currently experiencing. I want it to be real, in all its tantrum-ing, messy, teary, silly, beautiful glory. I want to capture this chapter in your story, so that you can look back and remember exactly how it looked and felt at this very moment.

“What we see depends mainly on what we look for.” ― John Lubbock

SESSIONS

PLEASE TAKE NOTE FOR ALL SESSIONS:

Your session fee is due at the time of booking and includes Laura's time and talent to capture the images on the day of your session. It does not include any prints, products or digital files. Upon delivery of your gallery, you will make your purchase decisions from the collections listed under each session type below.

STORYTELLING SESSION

Session Fee $250

A Storytelling Session documents your life, as you know it, in photographs. In the years to come, when you look back at images of you and your family, it will be the connections between all of you, and the ordinary, everyday moments captured, that will become your most treasured memories. The photographs made in this type of session tell the story of you and your family in a candid, genuine way. My sessions are all on location and last about 90 minutes. It is really important to plan some type of activity, to keep the focus off the camera. You just get to be with your loved ones, with a little bit of direction from me. I aim to photograph people as naturally and easily as possible. Of course there will also be some “everyone smiling looking at the camera” photographs, because everyone needs some of those, too.

Collection 1 - Family Legacy Book (12x12" hardcover coffee table book - 60 pages) - $700

Collection 2 - Digital Image Collection (a minimum of 60 high resolution, hand-edited digital images, delivered on USB) AND a fusion slideshow - $1000

Collection 3 - Family Legacy Book AND Digital Image Collection with fusion slideshow - $1250

Additional products are available for purchase separately.

Most of my clients purchase digital files from their session. If you purchase the files, you can print and share and enlarge as much as you want, whenever you are ready. You also have them on file as keepsakes, and can use them online with photo credit. Digital files offer incredible ease and value, but aren’t for everyone. If you are interested in prints or other items they are available to you.

  • Additional products are available for purchase separately. All orders subject to GST.
  • Additional fee for travel further than 30 km from Airdrie Alberta.

BEFORE YOUR SESSION

WHEN AND HOW DO WE BOOK?

I offer a limited number of sessions each month to ensure I have ample time to spend curating your story before, during and after your session. If you would like a special occasion or milestone documented, please contact me early! Once you have contacted me via my website or email (laura@onelovestudios.ca) we will discuss some ideas for the session and then I will send you a session agreement and an invoice for the session fee which can be paid via cash, check or Paypal. Your session is not booked until you have completed and returned the session agreement and paid the session fee.

HOW DO YOU PLAN OUR SESSION?

Once I have received your session agreement and retainer, I will send you a questionnaire asking you some details about your family. I can’t stress enough how important it is to complete and return this questionnaire, as your answers to these questions will give me insight into the meaningful details of your life and inform how I tell your story through my photographs. Please think carefully and thoughtfully about your answers and return the form to me promptly so I can begin planning the timeline of your session.

WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR?

You should wear whatever you are most comfortable in. This session is to tell “your story”, so there is no need to dress up or wear matching colors or any of that (in fact, please don’t!) - just be YOU. For your information, neutral colors tend to photograph well and I would prefer if you steered away from anything super bright/neon or anything with big logos or characters as they can be distracting. However, if your child insists on wearing their Yo Gabba Gabba t-shirt, that is TOTALLY FINE. The key here is to capture everyone’s true character and personality. So if you wear jeans and flip flops everyday, wear jeans and flip flops! Do not put on a dress!

MY HOUSE IS A MESS!

The point here is to capture your life in all its real-ness. The heart of a family is its home, and I want to capture that. If you don’t want me photographing your underwear on the floor, then by all means, put it away. But PLEASE do not feel like you have to call a cleaning crew in before I come over. Toys and guitars and computers and dishes and mail all tell a little bit about your story and where you are in your life right now. Don’t sanitize that!

WHAT HAPPENS IF I HAVE TO CANCEL?

I understand that life sometimes gets in the way of our plans-- kids get sick, unexpected things happen, and you may have to cancel our session. I just ask that you try to give me 24 hours notice if at all possible.

DURING YOUR SESSION

WHAT IS A TYPICAL SESSION LIKE?

Based on your answers to my questionnaire, we will come up with a plan for the session together. The session may take place at home or at another location - or both! If we are shooting at your home, together we will come up with a couple of activities ahead of time that will facilitate interaction and connection between family members - but the plan will be very flexible and we will go with the flow. When I arrive, I will spend a few minutes getting to know you, and then I will just start taking photographs or video as you go about your activities. For the most part, I will be a fly on the wall, capturing your day as it unfolds.

WHAT SHOULD WE BRING? (IF SHOOT IS SOMEWHERE OTHER THAN YOUR HOME)

If your family includes small children, you may want to pack a small backpack with snacks and juice. Children (and adults) are always in a better mood if they have full bellies and are well-rested. You can also feel free to bring along any toys that your child loves and anything that might make for a fun activity (a ball, a Frisbee, etc.). Please avoid giving them gummies during the shoot...this never works out well.

WHAT HAPPENS IF IT RAINS?

If it is dreadfully overcast and dark outside I may ask to re-schedule if we have any outdoor activities planned. However it does not have to be sunny outside to still get some amazing images! And in-home sessions can happen rain or shine, snow or sleet. No problem!

AFTER YOUR SESSION

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR ME TO GET MY IMAGES?

Storytelling Session packages will be ready within three weeks of your session. I will email you a link to your online gallery, where you will be able to download files and order prints. I will also send you a link to a gallery containing screen captures of the pages of your photo book. Please let me know within 5 days if you would like any changes made to the layouts - YOU ARE PERMITTED UP TO THREE CHANGES TO YOUR BOOK. Once you have approved the layouts, the book will be delivered within four weeks. If I do not hear from you within the 5 days, I will submit the layouts as is.

WILL THE IMAGES BE IN BLACK AND WHITE OR COLOR?

I usually gravitate toward black and white edits, but there will likely be some color processing as well.
