Hartford, Conn. – The Trinity College volleyball team, under the direction of Head Coach Jen Bowman (16th season), finished the 2019 season with an 8-15 overall record and 10th place in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) with a 1-9 mark in league play. The Bantams were 4-3 heading into conference action, but were swept, 3-0, on the road at Williams and Hamilton on September 20 and 21.
Trinity rattled off three wins in its next four matches to end September above .500 at 7-6, but went winless in October with a brutal nine-game stretch of top opponents that included several ranked among the nation’s top 25. Trinity rallied to earn a 3-2 victory at NESCAC rival Connecticut College on the final game of the season by a score of 3-2.
Trinity senior tri-captain OH Colette Scheffers (Flossmoor, Ill.) highlighted the season-opening Trinity Invitational with 26 kills on day two to lead the Bantams to wins over Clark and Westfield State. Trinity sent 3-1 in the last week of September, thanks to 41 total kills by sophomore MH Aly Conde (Danielson, Conn.), as the sophomore was honored as Trinity’s Bantam of the Week for her performance. Scheffers also led the way on the season finale against Connecticut College, notching 19 kills, 21 digs, and six blocks, while Conde added 15 more. Scheffers received Bantam of the Week recognition for her play against the Camels.
Trinity was solid at the net in 2019, finishing fourth in the NESCAC in blocks with 1.77 per set. Senior tri-captain Wylie Boughton (Andover, Mass.) was sixth in the league with 0.86 blocks per set, and Conde was ninth at 0.78 blocks per set. Bantam sophomore OH Hareena Johnson (Los Angeles, Calif.) also found herself among the league leaders statistically with 0.44 aces per set to rank ninth among NESCAC players.
Scheffers and Conde both averaged over two kills per set at 2.59 and 2.19, respectively, while Conde also boasted a team-best .192 hitting percentage. Trinity junior tri-captain Jessica Yang (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) paced the team in assists with 4.89 per set, and rookie Paula Matos (Bedford, N.H.) was the team leader in digs with 2.88 per set.
Junior Rebecca Chu (Old Tappan, N.J.), sophomores Alex Kelly (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), Locke Luhnow (Los Angeles, Calif.), and Natalia Ortiz (Bayamon, Puerto Rico), and first-year Molly Bernstein (Oakland, Calif.) also appeared in over half the team’s sets.
At the conclusion of the season, Boughton, Conde, Luhnow, and junior Brianna Brown (Telluride, Colo.) each represented Trinity volleyball on the 2020 NESCAC All-Academic Team, while Brown also graced the NESCAC All-Sportsmanship Team. Boughton and Scheffers completed their excellent Trinity careers this fall. Boughton amassed over 400 kills, 100 aces, 500 digs, and 150 blocks in 89 matches. Scheffers finished 10th all-time at Trinity with 787 career kills and added 780 digs in her 85 matches.
