Sketch

By Carl Sandburg

The shadows of the ships

Rock on the crest

In the low blue lustre

Of the tardy and the soft inrolling tide.

A long brown bar at the dip of the sky

Puts an arm of sand in the span of salt.

The lucid and endless wrinkles

Draw in, lapse and withdraw.

Wavelets crumble and white spent bubbles

Wash on the floor of the beach.

Rocking on the crest

In the low blue lustre

Are the shadows of the ships.

The author uses personification in line 6 to describe the ocean. He does this to compare the amount of sand to the amount of salt in the scene.

Throughout the whole poem, imagery is used to describe the ocean. The author uses this to give specific details about the ocean, the effect of this is an image of a large beach with waves and colors.

The author used these stylistic devices to give details and comparisons to the ocean.

One Man Can Change the World

By Big Sean

They used to tell me

I hope you learn to make it on your own

And if you love yourself just know you'll never be alone

I hope that you get everything you want and that you chose

I hope that it's the realest thing that you ever know

Hope you get the pretty girls, that's pretty and everything

Million dollar cribs havin' million dollar dreams

And when you get it all just remember one thing

Remember one thing

That one man could change the world

All I, all I wanted was a hundred million dollars and a bad chick

Imagine this so much some nights it felt like that I had it

Back on the mattress

Starin' at the ceilin' tryna to connect the dots

But its hard makin' those attachments

I'm talkin' dreamin' so hard, some nights it felt like draft day

You know? My - my step brother used to flip them bags outside the crib like it was trash day

No Kim K, but he bagged yay (Ye)

But when you're getting fast money, slow down, don't crash

With all the drive in the world, swear you still need gas

Look, think about it, close your eyes, dream about it

Tell your team about it, go make million dollar schemes about it

Success is on the way, I feel it in the distance

Used to look up at the stars and be like ain't too much that's different

I be shinin', they be shinin', get your one shot don't you miss it

What you know bout' wakin' up everyday like you on a mission?

I hope you learn to make it on your own

And if you love yourself just know you'll never be alone

I hope that you get everything you want and that you chose

I hope that it's the realest thing that you ever know

Hope you get the pretty girls, that's pretty and everything

Million dollar cribs havin' million dollar dreams

And when you get it all just remember one thing

Remember one thing

That one man could change the world

My grandma told me if you write your name in stone you'll never get the white out

I grinded out that black hole then performed up at the white house

Standin' next to Jim Carrey, we traded stories then laughed

I said you not the only one I know got rich wearin' masks

Where I'm from I swear they broke, they need way more than the cast

We need more than what you have

And then we need more than that

But how am I supposed to say I'm tired

If that girl from West Virginia came up in conditions that I couldn't survive

Went to war, came back alive

On top of that became a female black captain

When being black you had to extra extra try

Way before James Brown made us proud

She bought a crib on the same street as Marvin Gaye

Right there on Outer Drive, and she taught me how to drive

And she raised the kids, then the kids' kids, and she did it right

Taught me how to love, taught me not to cry

When I die, I hope you teach me how to fly

All my life you've been that angel in disguise saying

I hope you learn to make it on your own

And if you love yourself just know you'll never be alone

I hope that you get everything you want and that you chose

I hope that it's the realest thing that you ever know

Hope you get the pretty girls, that's pretty and everything

Million dollar cribs havin' million dollar dreams

And when you get it all just remember one thing

Remember one thing

That one man could change the world

Big Sean uses similes in line 16 to compare dreaming to a draft day. The purpose of this is to tell just how big his dreams are.

Big Sean uses allusion to tell how he was with Jim Carrey. The purpose of this is to show just how far he came in life; from nothing to something.

I'm Made of wax larry, what are you made of?

By A Day to Remember

Don't blink they won't even miss you at all,

And don't think that I'll always be gone,

You know I've got you like a puppet in the palm of my hand,

Don't you let me down!

So run like hell,

Sleep with one eye open,

I can't forgive or forget you

We'll tell everyone the damage done,

Deep down you can't stop me

You can't stop me now.

I'll be there just to watch you fall,

So don't push me, I've got nothing to lose.

Don't blink, they wont even miss you at all,

And don't think that I'll always be gone,

You know I've got you like a puppet in the palm of my hand,

Don't you let me down.

{Oops,} there I go again,

I made it so damn hard to come back from the mess that you're in

I need you to know, I told you so.

You're a snake and I'm cautious

Just use your head.

I'll be there just to watch you fall,

so don't push me, I've got nothing to lose.

Don't blink, they wont even miss you at all,

And don't think that I'll always be gone,

You know I've got you like a puppet in the palm of my hand,

Don't you let me down.

Don't blink, they wont even miss you at all,

And don't think that I'll always be gone,

You know I've got you like a puppet in the palm of my hand,

Don't you let me down.

Come on

Ooooooohhhhhh!

[Cough Cough]

Everybody's out to get me.

Any moment could be my last.

This is me, you can take it or leave.

Right or wrong

I will stand on my own two feet.

Just breathe.

Just breathe.

Oh!

The writer uses similes in line 3 to tell how he has someone in the palm of his hand. This means that he has advantage of someone. The effect of the simile is the image of a puppet in someones hand.

The writer uses a simile in line 5 to describe how he runs. He runs like hell, comparing his speed to hell. The effect of this is an image of someone running really fast.

"Prison"

School is like prison

I spend my whole life pacing the halls

Of a boring school

That is as cold as the north pole

The classrooms are like jail cells,

So small and cramped

Full of students,

Also waiting to go home
