A Mari Cocktails bringing a bit of ocean spirit to your life

There is a serious lack of punchy, fun, easy to make cocktails out there. Sure there are lots of foam-infused, dry ice-bathed sculptural masterpieces- which all look very fancy- but who has TIME to sculpt a beetroot into a swan? Not us.

So, here's a curated, easy to make selection focusing on A Mari-chic. You know, fresh herbs, great drinks, easy ocean spirits.

So we will start with the basics; what every aspiring drinks maestro needs to make the following recipes. All of the 'we likes' below are AWESOME local spirits.

Because, keep it local people.

White spirits: vodka ( we like hope on hopkins) : rum ( we like copeland): gin (a mari, obviously) : cachaca ( we like Jorgensen's)

Dark spirits: rum ( we like whistler) : whiskey ( we like bains) : tequila ( we like hope on hopkins esperanza)

Mixers: soda water, tonic water, ginger ale, a selection of fruit and citrus, cucumbers, chillies etc. Raid the fridge.

Flourishes: amaros, bitters, shrubs ( we will show you how to make these at a later date)

My name is Basil

Ingredients: 2 shots A Mari Atlantic, handful of basil, ice, tonic water

Muddle the basil in a shaker ( this means bash it gently in a suitable receptacle) and then add two shots of A Mari Atlantic and ice, shake then add to a glass over ice * garnish with a fresh basil leaf.

Sunset on the hood of a Rover

Ingredients: 2 shots A Mari Atlantic Ocean Gin, 1-2 tbsp African wild honey, 2 shots lemon juice (fresh), soda water, ice

Method: drizzle a bit of honey in the bottom of the glass, shake the honey and gin and lemon juice add ice and soda water, stir * you can add a cardamom pod too for a bit of zing..

Chili Lime Indian G&T

Ingredients: 2 shots A Mari Indian Ocean Gin, fresh red chilli, fresh limes, pinch of salt, tonic water (we like an Indian tonic for this)

Method: squeeze a lime or two into the bottom of the glass, add the gin, and two more quartered limes, and one red chilli * fill the glass with ice * top with tonic water and a pinch of salt, stir, and serve.

Lets get Minted

Ingredients: 2 shots A Mari Atlantic Ocean Gin, fresh mint, lemon syrup, tonic water

Method: add syrup and gin to a glass, muddle over the mint * add tonic water and ice and top with fresh mint leaves

The Pink Lady

Ingredients: A Mari Atlantic Ocean Gin; punnet of mulberries or strawberries or raspberries; lemons; cinnamon quill, dried rose petal and lemon wheel to garnish.

Method: blend the fruit, ice and juice of half a lemon * strain the juice * then add gin and bitters to a glass, mix * add fruit juice, top with crushed ice and garnish.

Bloody A Mari (the hangover cure)

Ingredients: 2 shots A Mari Atlantic, a 50/50 mix of tomato juice and tamarillo juice ( tree tomato, if these are in season) to which you add 2 dashes tabasco, 2tsp fresh horseradish, 2 dashes Worcester sauce, 1 pinch celery salt, 1 pinch black pepper, 1 pinch smoked paprika, 1 pinch ghost habanero.

Method:Shake, pour over ice and garnish with a bacon sandwich!

Chaitini

Ingredients: 1.5 tot A Mari Indian Ocean Gin, 0.5 tot cold chai tea, 0.5 tot Ramazotti Amaro

Garnish: chai spice ( make a tea masala from dried ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, black pepper and cardamom)

Method: mix the cold chai, A Mari and Ramazotti in a shaker with ice * wet the rim of the glass and roll in chai spice * pour in the drink and enjoy

The Ocean Negroni

The basic law of thumb with a Negroni is a third of each alcohol.

Ingredients: 1 tot A Mari (we like Indian best for this) 1 tot Campari 1 tot Amaro (Ramazotti or Cynar work very well) sliver of orange rind or a burnt orange slice

Method: Shake ingredients over ice, pour into a tumbler over ice, garnish with orange

The Classic Martini

Ingredients: 2 shots A Mari Atlantic, splash

Vermouth ( we use Dolin)

Method: rinse the Martini glass out with the Vermouth. Discard. Stir gin over ice and pour into glass, garnish with an olive or a twist of grapefruit peel.

The Gin Old Fashioned

Ingredients: 2 shots A Mari Indian Ocean, 3 dashes Angostura bitters, 1 Sugar Cube, Club Soda, Orange for garnish

Method: Place the sugar cube (or 1/2 teaspoon loose sugar) in a tumbler. Wet it with 2 or 3 dashes of Angostura bitters and a short splash of club soda. Crush the sugar with a wooden muddler, high heel, rolling pin, spoon, whatever. Rotate the glass so that the sugar grains and bitters coat it. Add a large ice cube. Pour in the gin. Stir. Garnish. Drink.

A Mari Aperol

Ingredients: 1 - 1¼ oz. A Mari Atlantic (depending on strong you like it!) ¾ oz. freshly squeezed lemon juice ½ oz. Aperol ¼ oz. Cointreau or Triple Sec

Method: shake over ice, pour into a coupe, serve with an orange slice

A Mari Strawmaris

This is like, EPIC, for summer. Its light and fragrant and could be a desert and counts as one of your five a day. WInner.

Ingredients: 2oz A Mari Atlantic, 1 punnet fresh strawberries, fresh mint, soda, sugar syrup.

Method: Blitz strawbs in a blender, strain out seeds. sweeten to taste with sugar syrup. Add to a shaker with the gin, shake and/or into a tumbler with ice, top with a splash of soda, stir, garnish with mint.

A Mari Mojito

Ingredients; 2 oz A Mari Atlantic, 1 lime, juiced, 2 lime wedges, 1 oz simple syrup, 2 sprigs mint, club soda

Method: Muddle together a handful of mint with the lime wedges, juice and simple syrup .Add the gin and shake well. Pour into a glass of crushed ice, splash of soda, garnish with mint and more lime wedges.

A Mari Greyhound

Ingredients: 2oz A Mari Atlantic, 4oz fresh pink grapefruit juice, sugar syrup, pink grapefruit wheel to garnish

Method: Sweeten the grapefruit juice with the syrup to your taste. Add the grapefruit juice and the gin to a shaker, stir, pour into a chilled glass and garnish.

A Mariage of true minds

2 oz A Mari Indian Ocean, 1 oz Champagne, a sprinkle of pomegranate rubies to garnish

Method: Add gin and bubbles to a flute, top with pomegranate rubies. Feel like a princess.
