In 100 days, 216 athletes (including 34 Unified partners) and 63 coaches from 45 states in the US will join more than 7,000 Special Olympics athletes, 2,500 coaches & delegates, 170 nations and more than 20,000 volunteers for competition March 14 – 21, 2019 at the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019.
The 2019 World Games will begin with a star-studded Opening Ceremony on March 14 in the iconic Zayed Sports City Stadium in the heart of Abu Dhabi, the largest sports venue in the Gulf.
In the days following the Opening Ceremony, Special Olympics USA athletes will compete in 18 of the 24 sports offered and will strive to bring home the Gold in athletics, basketball, bocce, bowling, cycling, equestrian, football (soccer), golf, artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, open water swimming, powerlifting, sailing, swimming, table tennis, tennis, triathlon, and volleyball.
Every two years, the world transcends the boundaries of geography, nationality, political philosophy, gender, age, culture and religion to come together for the Special Olympics World Games.
This will be our movement’s first time hosting World Games in this region. The 2019 Special Olympics World Games will be an iconic and transforming event for Abu Dhabi, the nation, and the world.
In addition to the over 7,000 hours of sports competition, the Games will feature several non-sports activities and programs, including Healthy Athletes free health screenings for all team members, the Special Olympics Festivals, Live and Play Unified Fan Zones at every sports venue, and the Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg.
Other exciting events taking place during the games will include a GenUin Global Youth Summit, Global Policy Summit and Dialogue, Family and Honored Guests Hospitality Centers, and the Special Olympics Dance Challenge. Additional information can be found by visiting www.AbuDhabi2019.org.
For the next 100 days, Special Olympics USA athletes will train hard and prepare themselves for victory. They will lean on the support of their coaches, families, friends and community to help get them ready. The 2019 Special Olympics USA athletes will embark on an adventure unlike any other and the world will be watching and cheering.
Over the next 100 days, you will hear the stories of courage and determination. You will learn about the obstacles and challenges that were overcome. You will see the world rally together for inclusion. You will see the determination of individuals with intellectual disabilities.
