Mission Statement

Welcome to Vickery Creek Elementary

Watch the video below for a message from our principal, Kristan Riedinger.

The Forsyth County Schools Learner Profile is the work of our school district. It is displayed in every classroom. The Learner Profile lists the attributes we expect all students to possess by the time they graduate from one of our high schools. This profile keeps student learning at the heart of all decision-making.

Leadership

Vickery Creek is a leadership development school. We apply the work of Dr. Stephen Covey, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People to all functions of school. We believe that leadership is truly for all people. We live this paradigm by example each and every day. Our staff, students and community members have multiple opportunities to contribute their talents and gifts to the continuous improvement of our school. Additionally, all students hold critical leadership roles in the classroom and throughout the school.

Some of the school leadership roles for students include...

  • Cafeteria Managers
  • Equipment Managers
  • Student Lighthouse Teams
  • Viking Friday Ambassadors
  • New Student Ambassadors
  • Hospitality Team
  • Junior ITS
  • Principal's School Improvement Council
  • Student Lighthouse Team

Vickery Creek Elementary opened in 1997 with Mr. Mike Rosano as its first principal. The school was built to help alleviate overcrowding at Midway and Cumming elementary schools. It was named after the community, Vickery Creek, in which it is located. Vickery Creek is named after a Cherokee woman named Sharlot Vickery that lived in present-day Roswell and owned much of the land around the creek. The creek was originally called Cedar Creek; however, the name was changed to Vickery some time after the arrival of Roswell King and family in 1834.

Building Relationships

"Children do not care how much you know until they know how much you care."

As a Leader In Me, International Lighthouse school, we focus on improving ourselves and our relationships through the application of the 7 Habits. Strong, supportive and positive relationships between all stakeholders are the hallmark of our school.

  • Habit 1: Be Proactive
  • Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind
  • Habit 3: Put First Things First
  • Habit 4: Think Win-Win
  • Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood
  • Habit 6: Synergize
  • Habit 7: Sharpen The Saw

Balanced Literacy

We value and emphasize high-quality literacy instruction. Our teachers implement this through rigorous instruction that is student-centered and personalized to meet all children's individual needs.

In a typical literacy block, you may see students enjoying a read-aloud, reading books of their choice independently, conferring with their teacher to work on goals, researching, writing, or participating in literature circles.

Math

At Vickery Creek, we believe that quality math instruction will equip students to be real-life problem solvers. Students gain a deeper understanding through exploration, application, discussion, and feedback.

In a typical math block, you may see students participating in number talks, working in groups, engaged in a Dreambox lesson on a computer, or using hands-on strategies to solve real-world problems.

Inquiry

We believe that science and social studies concepts are best learned through authentic experiences. Through questioning, researching, talking with experts, experimenting, and reenacting, our students gain a deeper understanding of the sciences.
