About me

Joseph Fernandez

On March 21st, 1998 in North York, ON, a boy named Joseph Fernandez was born and was brought up by two loving parents and a feisty little sister. Having been exposed to cartoons, anime, and comic books at a young age gained my artistic interest within the art world. Creating art is one of my passions besides rocking out on the electric guitar, it gives me the opportunity to express myself and showcase my style of how I interpret the world around me. In the words of Bob Ross “Believe that you can do it cause you can do it.” Those words were so inspiring to me and Bob Ross was the reason why I enjoy creating art. Watching his show “The Joy Of Painting” as a young boy, I was amazed on how impressive his paintings were. I thought to myself that I couldn’t do it but when he demonstrated the techniques, it was so simplistic that I wanted to try it out. Practice is the most important thing in learning a new skill. Everyone might have that skill naturally while others work hard for it. In the end, everyone is different and we should all appreciate the art that everyone expresses.

Creative Process

Started off by getting a photographic reference of Ozzy Osbourne and using gray scale markers to separate the different values of his body.
Used tracing paper to outline the body and coloured the back of the paper for better transferring on an illustration board.
After transferring the outline onto a 10 x 15 illustration board, I used a fine tip marker and used the stippling technique for better control of capturing the light and dark values of the final piece.

Inspirational quotes

"We don't make mistakes, just happy little accidents." -Bob Ross

"I've worked hard on my technique, and it comes rom the f**king heart, y'know." -Dimebag Darrell

"You rarely have time for everything you want in life, so you need to make choices. And hopefully your choices can come from a deep sense of who you are." -Fred Rogers

Where will my future take me next?

Despite all the challenges I've faced so far, I managed to overcome them by taking risks as well as putting effort into my work. I plan on taking Interaction Design at George Brown College as it is more on the psychological aspect of design rather than the physical aspect. As my time Art & Design Foundation program at George Brown College is coming to an end, this program has unleashed my true creativity, learning from other students in the class, as well as the opportunity to explore the different careers available within the art world. The professors that I've had throughout my first year of college impressed me from the start and would give excellent feedback that would improve who I've become up until now. I'm more of a lone wolf as supposed to going to someone for advice, not that I have anything against it but I feel as an individual, it's important to learn things on your own when you learn a new skill but whenever you're in need, it's always good to have someone help you out along the way. Well, there's really nothing left for me to say other than, if I were to give advice to those who want to study art at George Brown, I would tell them just to follow your heart and make wise decisions of where you want to take yourself in life.
