Developments of Travel and Tourism ANNA-LEIGH wEBSTER

There are 6 key developments in the Travel and Tourism Industry which are: Legislation, Product Development, Destination Development, Technological Development, Transport development, Lifestyle changes.

Legislation

Development of Tourism Act:

It was passed in 1969 and it was when money and grants became available for tourist developments. The following organisations were established

The British Tourist Authority were established as - Visit Britain

The English Tourist Board were established as - Visit England

The Scottish Tourist Board were established as - Visit Scotland

The Welsh Tourist Board were established as - Visit Wales

Package Travel Regulations

January 1st 1993 the Package Travel Regulations came into force in what were the then 12 member countries of the EU. Which were Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Denmark, Ireland, United Kingdom, Greece, Spain and Portugal. This was put in place to give holidays makers more protection and access to compensation if any thing goes wrong

Product Development

Holidays have change massively over the last 50 years

Trips have become available to the majority of the UK and in 2013 the number of outbound trips 53 million and outgoing tourist expenditure was £34 billion

Holiday camps became a big thing, Butlins is a popular chain of holiday camps around the UK and the first Butlins was founded in 1936 in Skegness

Package Holidays

A package holiday is a holiday organised by a travel agents with arrangements for accommodation, flights, transfers and in some cases excursions too

In the 1960's the 'package holiday' took off and Spain the Balaeric's and Greece become popular, but the first package holiday was in 1949 to Corsica and this was with Horizon Holidays and was on a 32 seater aircraft with full board accommodation but in tents

Package holidays are usually most known for being 'all inclusive holidays' and these are the most popular holidays that people tend to go on

An example of a package holiday I found is with Thomas Cook and they offer package holidays to Paris which include flights, accommodation and bed and breakfast board basis. The cheapest package is £951.47 this includes a Superior Double Room which is bed and breakfast, returning flights from Cardiff and Airport Transfers.

Destination Development

Majorca has developed massively as you can see from the photos above there is a huge difference. Majorca now is a much more built up holiday destination and is very popular. Tourists have been coming to Majorca for over 100 years and it is said that over 215 million people have visited the island

Major countries have developed because entrepreneurs started building quickly before any strict planning laws where made as today's planning laws are much stricter

Technological Development

Some of the most notable recent technological developments include:

The internet – has massively changed the way people buy travel products

Call centres – now used extensively by major holiday companies and airlines

Digital and cable TV – new outlets for selling travel products

Self check-in – saves costs for the travel companies and increases convenience for travellers. EasyJet is a popular organisation that has introduced an eticketing app for phones where you can check in via the app. This way it's easier and faster for travellers

Transport Development

Transport for tourism is constantly changing to meet customer demands for safer, faster, more comfortable and more affordable travel. Important developments in transport in recent years include development of the jet aircraft and growth of low-cost airlines

The Heinkel He 178 was the world's first aircraft to fly under turbojet power, and the first practical jet aircraft. It was a private venture by the German Heinkel company in accordance with director Ernst Heinkel's emphasis on developing technology for high-speed flight. It first flew on 27 August 1939

Many companies are now trying to design a new jet aircraft to become the new Concorde

Lifestyle Changes

British lifestyles have changed immensely in the last 50 years. We now have a wide range of time-saving household goods such as dishwashers, washing machines, microwave ovens, DIY goods and garden machinery

The UK has seen an increase in part-time and contract working, while technological developments such as laptops and mobile phones have allowed people to work from home much more than in the past
