CREATING MY OWN HERO the works of Kylin Chen

About myself

Hi, here is my sample reel. Thanks for visiting my site and talking some time to browse around.

I am Jialin Chen. I am an international student from Guangzhou, China. I currently live in Toronto, Canada where I am learning about art and design at George Brown College. I love painting and design.

Why I love arts and design?

Like most other kids, when I was young I loved ACG (animation, comics and games). Because of this. I always imagined myself living in those fantasy worlds as some sort of character with special powers. Sometimes, I draw original characters from my imagination to share with my friends. My best friend is a good painter. I met him in kindergarten when I was five. My Ultraman toy battled with his superhero character and that was the beginning of our friendship. I always imitated him and we tried to create our own comic story at that time. I miss those times, they made me happy. This is the reason why I love arts and design.

Like many other classmates' parents, my father was not happy with the idea of me leaning arts and design. Ironically, he was a designer! He painted for newspapers and understood how hard it was to to make a living as an artist. That confused me, but , I decided to keep pushing myself in that direction. I am determined to keep drawing in my future whether as a job or as a hobby.

Creation

I can't stop painting. I am always drawing characters from films, animations, comics, and games, as well as original characters from my imagination. I have come to appreciate many stories through watching, reading and playing, but I hope that I can create my own stories someday. I will start by creating my own characters.

"Life imitates art far more than art imitates life"—Oscar Wilde

In my view, character creation should be inspired by real life characters. Prototyping characters in this way makes them more real. However, we should not fully copy someone, this makes the character lost its individuality.

Mobile Digital Content Creation (Cameo)

This was a digital rendering done on iPad using Adobe Illustrator Draw. The intention was to explore mobile content creation as well as capturing physical aspects of character. This Cameo sought to capture and distil physical attributes of the subject only.

This was a digital rendering done on iPad using Adobe Illustrator Draw. The intention was to explore mobile content creation as well as capturing the essential physical data of a subject. This Cameo sought to capture and distil physical attributes of the subject only.

The steps involved in this process were as follows: 1: Select the image and make it greyscale; 2. Outline the face; 3. Use large sized pen tool to daub hair and use erase to trim them; 4. Use small pen to draw the highlight on hair with white and make some detail in black; 5. Add detail on face like eyes and lips. 6. Add some shadow; 7. Add background.

I learned many things doing this project. I learned how to draw from an image reference which will be very helpful for me pursuing my dream of creating comics. I think that my greatest success came from the amount of time and effort that I spent on it—not because my professor was pushing me but because it is my girlfriend that I was rendering and, if I didn't get it perfect, she may have killed me :(.

Original Manga character design. Media: Digital (MediBang Paint).

I used the skills learned in my digital media , foundation drawing and colour design courses to create my own original character. I found that my drawing skills greatly improved.
