The Civil rights movement was a world wide series of political movements for racial equality. It all started in 1863, right after the civil war when 16th president Abraham Lincon passed the Emancipation Proclamation, which abolished slavery in the U.S. The movement would latter pick up and Dr Martin Luther King Jr would lead it.
In 1955, Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat to a white man and is arrested. This starts the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
In 1960, groups of African Americans all over Greensboro, North Carolina sit in all white restaurants refusing to serve blacks out of protest.
In 1963, Dr Martin Luther King Jr gives his famous "I Have a Dream" speech in front of hundreds of thousands of participants of the "March on Washington". Later that year, congress passed the Equal Pay Act.
In 1964, president Roosevelt passed the Civil Rights Act which abolished discrimination of races in public facilities, accommodations & public education, Federally-assisted programs, employment, and Federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
In 1965, the Voting Rights act is passed which prohibits the denial and restriction to vote. It also forbids discriminatory voting practices nationwide. Later that year, Malcolm X is assassinated at the age of 39 in New York.
1968, Martin Luther King Jr is assassinated in Memphis Tennessee while giving a speech. 1,300 people attended the funeral but after the funeral, there was a procession walk. The walk was 3 1/2 miles through Atlanta and 100,000+ people attended the walk.
In 1971, the Equal Rights Ammendment is voted into congress. At this point, the civil rights movement has included gender and race. This Ammendment was to guarantee voting rights to all persons, regardless of gender. This Ammendment never was voted to law because it did not receive enough votes.
In 1978, the pregnancy discrimination act was passed. This act prohibits employment discrimination on female workers who are (or plan to) pregnant. This includes discrimination in hiring, failure to promote, and wrongful termination.
1990-1993; during this time period, 2 acts were passed: the Americans with Disabilities act and Family & medical leave act. The Americans with disabilities act protects people with disabilities from discrimination. The family and medical leave act gives employees the right to take off work to take care of a newborn.
