Fear of the Unknown of Vampires By Megan Bray

Introductory Letter

In American society we have many fears, monsters, the dark and even vampires. “The belief in vampires stems from superstition and mistaken assumptions about postmortem decay.” (Vampires: Fact, Fiction and Folklore) There have been shows created with vampires in them. It makes us think about the reality, and how they could be real. Then we are able to see the things that vampires do, and cause in our world. Makes you think, “could that really happen to me?” Maybe when you lay in bed late at night and your mind starts to wander, it then creates images in your head of what the vampires, or other monsters could do to you.

Vampires were created to be a monster that is a sort of human. They don’t look scary or even much different than the normal person. “Writers can play with the "rules" while adding, subtracting or changing them to fit whatever story they have in mind.” (Vampires: Fact, Fiction and Folklore) But something changes them when they are a vampire. Their teeth become sharp, their eyes red. Vampires are known to suck humans blood and kill them. They can brainwash humans and take control of them.

I chose to do the topic of vampires because I am really into the show Vampire Diaries. It’s almost like it takes the lives of normal teenage kids but they have an issue, some of their friends are vampires. Some are then turned into vampires and it creates this whole story line. “In the history of vampire legends, the Highgate incident is a modern phenomenon. It has less to do with the desire to control a community’s health and a lot more in common with modern scares, like the creepy clown sightings that went viral this year—even if people don’t believe it, they’re still drawn to the hype.” (The Bloody Truth about Vampires) I was interested in this topic because we are watching these shows and fearing vampires, but has there ever been real times in life that we have seen or experienced actual vampire like situations. So I wonder Why do we fear the Unknown of Vampires?

Katherine Gray

March 13, 2018

Katherine Gray, age 23, was found dead laying under her car outside of Target on Thursday, March 12, 2018. It was made to look as though she was run over by the vehicle. But closer examination shows puncture wounds to the neck and abdomen. She was born on June 17, 1995 in Skowhegan, Maine. A graduate of Skowhegan Area high school class of 2013. She worked at the Redington Fairview General Hospital on the labor and delivery floor, right out of college at Saint Joesephs College in Standish, Maine. Katherine had a very positive outlook on life, she enjoyed spending her weekends on the lake at her parents lake house with her sister, brother in-law and niece. She was always willing to help anyone who needed it, and her heart was always open to meeting new people. Family, friends and others that Katherine has impacted are invited to the Fairview Funeral Home, 206 Hamilton Parkway, from 1p.m. - 4p.m. on Tuesday, March 17, 2018, to reminisce, grieve, and support each other in this time of need.

In the small town of Skowhegan not many people don’t know each other. The community all works together and try’s to help everyone they can. But the strangest things have been occurring and nobody could explain it. Lisa was a mother of a 4 year old girl who had just been found dead in the streets. Since then everything had changed.

Lisa took the next few weeks after her daughters death to grieve and figure things out. Staying at home, to shuffle through Madeline her daughters things. She would pace around the house looking for ways that Madeline could have got put in the night. If her windows had been opened or disheveled, but nothing added up. Everything was perfect and the same as it always was. In the time Lisa spent home alone many strange things started to happen. More and more often she would hear the cracking of leaves and breaking sticks outside, she would look out and nobody would be out there, no sound anymore. Days went on, she would find the front door swung open, dead mice left on the front porch, then soon being found in and around her home. They all had small wounds on their sides. All exactly the same. Lisa started to do some research, she came across some articles about vampires. Not wanting to believe this could may be what killed her little girl she just told her husband about the crazy idea. ”Although modern science has silenced the vampire fears of the past, people who call themselves vampires do exist. They’re normal-seeming people who drink small amounts of blood in a (perhaps misguided) effort to stay healthy.” (history.com) he didn’t believe a thing she was saying.he thought it was all crazy and that the mice were just dying from some disease.

Time went on and Lisa couldn’t go back to normal life, she researched vampires all day long. Until one day there was a knock on the door early in the morning after her husband had left. She opened the door to find a man standing there smiling at her. His eyes all bloodshot. Saying nothing he looked at Lisa his teeth came out and he sucked the blood out of her, killing her instantly.

End notes

Informative writing 1

I chose to write an obituary, for a normal young woman who lives in this town, she lives a normal live, goes to college and works out of school. She is then found dead, it is very random and strange. I also feel like kids in this generation don’t just look at the paper and read obituaries. It’s older, and maybe makes you feel uncomfortable reading about someone’s past life.

Functional piece

This was for my journal entry, I chose to write like a diary entry of a young boy sitting in his basement watching the news as more and more murder cases show up. This is because it’s something not as many people do now. It’s older and something you might think of finding, like an old journal which I find kind of creepy.

Informative writing 2

For this I am writing a news letter. To look more like a page in the paper. Explaining the death of a young girl just discovered. And give more background information on why people are afraid of vampires. What it is that people think of when they hear the word vampire.

Creative writing

My creative writing piece was a short story of a mother who is experiencing strange things after her daughters death. She believes it is vampires but seems crazy. In my research I discovered that some people didn’t believe in vampires but others feel they aren’t real. So I tied that idea into my short story.
