Followers of Islam are called muslims. About 1.2 billion muslims live in the world and they are mainly located in the Middle East and North Africa.
Islam was started by the prophet Muhammad. It was started in Mecca and is said a holy angel from the lord visited Muhammad.
Muhammad began Islam. The qua ran contains all his teachings and revelations he received.
This map shows the spread of Islam when it began and through the years. It spread from Mecca out through Africa and also further into the Middle East.
A big part of Islam includes the five pillars of Faith. They believe in one god and also in the prophet Muhammad. They pray 5 times a day and always face towards Mecca. They fast for one mouth out of the year and can't eat from dawn to dusk.
This is the holy book of Islam. It is called the Qua ran and it contains teachings of the prophet Muhammad.
This is the star and crescent symbol. The star and crescent symbol was the emblem of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century, and gradually became associated with Islam in late 19th-century Orientalism.
Muslims congregate at mosques to worship God together. This is an example of one such mosque.
There are two official holidays in Islam: Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha. Eid Al-Fitr is celebrated at the end of Ramadan which is a month of fasting during daylight hours, and Muslims usually give zakat (charity) on the occasion.


In several muslims countries, it is legal to stone people to death and also have honor killings. It also okay in many Muslim countries for men to beat their wives.
