First Grade Music September-November 2016

Our music curriculum

In First Grade, the students will be focusing on three main units:

  1. Musical Opposites
  2. Musical Patterns
  3. Musical Stories

Each unit will last about 3 months. Below are the enduring understandings that the students have been working on for our first unit.

Musical opposites:

  • I can describe differences in music
  • I can show musical opposites with my body, my voice, or an instrument
  • Music is more interesting when it contains different sounds

The musical activies in class

The first graders have been learning many songs about animals to help them experience the musical opposites with their voice, with their body and with an instrument. The students have also been studying the music The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saƫns, This famous orchestral music has helped the students feel, hear and experience the musical opposites. Animal sounds can be high like a bird chirping or low like a cow mooing. Animals can move slowly like a tortoise plodding or fast like a hen scratching. Animal sounds can be loud like a lion roaring or soft like a swan gliding along a quiet river.
