Senator Cramer's Weekly Update June 10 - June 16

Congratulations to the Happy Hooligans

This week, the 119th Wing of North Dakota’s Air National Guard was presented with the Colonel William L. Deneke Outstanding Civil Engineer Unit Award for excellence.

Congratulations to the Happy Hooligans on earning another major award. This time they are being recognized as the best civil engineers in the Air National Guard. Excellence is the culture at the North Dakota National Guard, and the Hooligans continue to show us why.

Washington State Crude-by-Rail Ban

Senators John Hoeven, Congressman Kelly Armstrong and I contacted Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao to make the case that a recently-passed Washington State crude-by-rail law violates the Interstate Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution and oversteps the Department of Transportations' authority over the shipment of crude oil within the United States.

Washington State’s law will limit our energy industry’s ability to access safe and reliable transportation for this vital commodity, impacting good-paying jobs in our state and undermining our nation’s energy security. We will continue working to overturn this law and resolve this matter as soon as possible.

Presiding at Boy's State

It was an honor to preside over a joint session of the North Dakota Boys State Legislature and to see the next generation of leaders in action this week. While there, I reconnected with Theodore Mayer, who was recently accepted into the United State Military Academy at West Point. North Dakota is well-represented by Theodore and I wish him well as he begins his studies.

Settling DAPL Protest Damages

The North Dakota Congressional delegation wrote a letter to the Attorney General and the acting Secretary of Defense to urge their involvement in achieving an equitable settlement for North Dakota for damages resulting from the Army Corps’ negligence during the DAPL protests.

You can read the full letter on the left and click the button below for more information.

Faith Out Front

North Dakota Ministry Network held a family camp at Lakewood Park Bible Camp. During their Men's Breakfast, I spoke about what it means to live a life of faith while being in the public's eye. What a blessing to encourage and be encouraged by these men.

Disaster Declaration for Spring Flooding

President Trump issued a major disaster declaration covering this year’s widespread spring flooding in North Dakota. The declaration covers the period from March 21 to April 28 and triggers the release of funding under the Federal Emergency Management Agency for the impacted counties and to help reduce these regions’ risk of future flooding.

Last month, the North Dakota Congressional delegation sent President Trump a letter urging him to approve North Dakota's request. This disaster declaration is an important step both in making our communities whole and in protecting against future floods.

Fairness for High Skilled Immigrants

It was great to see my friends from Immigration Voice this week. North Dakota is blessed to be home to many immigrant software developers, physicians and surgeons, engineers and other professionals. The long wait- in many cases, many decades- for these valued neighbors and servants to get green cards is a disservice, not only to them and their families, but also to the potential of the American economy.

Congress must work to pass the Fairness for High Skilled Immigrants Act. You can read more about the bill by clicking the button below.

A Flag Worth Dying For

On Flag Day, Montana Senator Steve Daines led a group of my colleagues in introducing a Constitutional amendment to prohibit the desecration of the United States flag.

A flag worth dying for is a flag worth protecting. While we should always be mindful of First Amendment rights, the American flag signifies the founding principles that countless men and women have given their lives to preserve. Adding a Constitutional amendment to protect this symbol of freedom and liberty is not an attack on another Constitutional amendment; rather, it is an affirmation of the unifying principles our nation stands for.

Condemning Anti-Semitism

Anti-Semitic beliefs have no place in this Congress and no place in our society. The Senate affirmed that belief by passing a resolution introduced by Texas Senator Ted Cruz, Florida Senator Marco Rubio and myself condemning discrimination against Israeli-Americans.

While some House Democrats have struggled to accept that reality, the resolution affirms that hatred and prejudice towards Jewish people should never be tolerated. The resolution also commits us as elected leaders to speaking out against anti-Semitism in all its forms.

Helping our Blue Water Veterans

The Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act passed unanimously out of the House and Senate, and it is on its way to the President's desk for signature. The bill rectifies a decades-old injustice against our veterans. It will secure disability and health care benefits for Navy veterans, known as “Blue Water” veterans who were exposed to Agent Orange while fighting in the Vietnam War. All who risked their lives in Vietnam deserve to be honored and given access to the care they need.

Supporting ND Agriculture

President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order on modernizing the regulatory framework for agricultural biotechnology products.

Biotechnology regulations are cumbersome and costly, and they often stifle biotech startups in North Dakota and across the country from making the advancements that will keep American agriculture at the forefront of biotechnology. Thank you to President Trump and Secretary Perdue for taking steps to modernize the biotech regulatory process.

Helping Veterans with PTSD

We are at war. The willingness of our military to give all to preserve our freedom comes at a great cost. Members of our armed forces sacrifice everything to serve our nation and protect us at home. Those who are suffering from PTSD often feel alone, helpless, and unsure how to readjust to civilian life. Designating June as National Post-Traumatic Stress Awareness Month shines a light on the resources available to veterans and reaffirms our commitment to ensuring they receive the care and assistance they need.

LIVE on Fox Business

On Fox Business, Neil Cavuto and I spoke about Poland committing to increase purchases of liquified natural gas and the potential for stationing more US troops in their country. Poland is an important ally, and they have defense and energy needs we can meet. You can watch the interview below.

North Dakotans in D.C.

Close-Up students from Sheyenne joined me on the Capitol steps on a beautiful day. We talked about term limits, DC traffic, state representation, and important issues facing our state.
Appreciated speaking with North Dakota’s United Health Foundation Diverse Scholar recipients about diversity in the work place, especially the health care sector. Congratulations on this outstanding achievement!
