G.O.T. Preparedness Active Threats Targeting Medical Facilities

"It's been happening almost anywhere, but nobody was waiting for this. Who would have thought it would happen in a hospital?" - Witness of the June 2017 Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center shooting.
An Ordinary Day Can Turn Extraordinary In An Instant

Hospitals and medical facilities face unique challenges from Active Assailants. Thirty-two Active Assailant Incidents, involving firearms, targeted medical facilities between October 1991 and April 2019, killing 50 and wounding 58 others.

  • 87% of shooters were associated with the medical facility. Most shooters were current or former employees and patients.
  • In Active Assailant Incidents involving firearms, 9 doctors, 13 nurses, and 42 other medical staff were killed or wounded.
  • On June 30, 2017, Dr. Henry Bello attacked his former place of employment at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center. He killed one doctor and wounded six others. He disguised himself in a white lab coat and used his old employee badge to enter the hospital.
  • Lives were saved on November 19, 2018, after Juan Lopez first targeted his ex-fiance in the parking lot before entering the Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago. Although one was killed as they exited the elevator, others were saved after the pharmacy locked down, following Active Shooter protocols. Lopez attempted to enter the pharmacy, but was unsuccessful and was then either killed by police or committed suicide with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Preparedness is a mindset and the foundation for resiliency at an individual and community level which requires a holistic approach, not a single-threaded tactical solution.
