We’ve all fielded questions about what ports really do...public perception of a port’s role is incredibly varied, and ports are often misunderstood as recreational or solely industrial. The ports below have put together innovative ways to communicate to their public that a port is many things - an economic development driver, a steward of public lands and waterfront, and most importantly, an organization that plans for long-term economic health and growth, while encouraging quality of life.

It is not uncommon for folks to come to the port staff or commission and ask for a discount based upon what is usually described as some form of a “public good.” These requests include such things as reduced lease rates, free or reduced moorage for community groups, senior citizen or veteran discounts and reduced users fee agreements for non-profits. All these entreaties have a common theme – the port should deviate from its normal business practices to support the described “public good.”
