Superintendent's Notes November 6, 2020

In the crazy times we are experiencing, it is incredibly easy to forget to remember the positive. November is the perfect month to ponder the small things that make our own world beautiful. I am reminded of the small things each time I see the changing colors of the season. The photo above was captured at Angus Valley Elementary this week and reminded me to stop and breathe and take it all in. I challenge you this month to start a grateful journal, even if it is just a list you keep in your head. Take the time to stop and breathe. Ms. Amy Pennington received this message in an email from a parent this week, "I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the hard work you are all doing at the schools through this pandemic craziness!" Our community and our parents notice the difference we are making. Thank you for sharing this sentiment with me Amy!

CONGRATULATIONS to the 2021 Site Teachers of the Year. What an OUTSTANDING group of educators! Selection by one's colleagues is such an HONOR. In typical Sandite format, we are honoring a stellar group of individuals!!

Ms. Abbie Wilson from Pratt Elementary celebrated DAY 50 of school yesterday! YES, we have surpassed 50 days of school this year! #somethingtocelebrate
The ground has officially been broken at Angus Valley Elementary in preparation for the new gym and storm shelter! It's going to be fun to watch the progress this year!

We are in the midst of the Bedlam Food Drive for Sand Springs Community Services. The Student Council and Business Professionals of America at CPHS have challenged our community to help SSCS support Sandite families during the holiday season! It is a worthy effort and a way to give back to our community. If you have a chance, pick up some canned goods to deliver to your own site, as many of our other sites are participating, to help out!

Hallway etiquette at its best at Garfield STEAM Academy!

We are proud to announce that Shawn Beard has earned the title Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning! I cannot begin to express how thankful we are for Mr. Beard's work through the pandemic, during which he finished his Educational Leadership program and the Superintendent certification process! He has certainly earned this title and this honor. Thank you Mr. Beard for your dedication to our students and for your critical role in our necessary shift in teaching strategies. #BESandite

Way to go Shawn!
We had the honor of delivering the very late trophies to last year's Site Teachers of the Year this week. Here's a few pics from the deliveries. Ms. Clawson from Pratt Elementary poses with her students, the admin team at CBMS along with a few students pose with Ms. Terri Whitney from CBMS, and Ms. Kaitlyn Knowlton's students agreed to pose for a pic at the new Freshman Academy! Hooray for all of our 2020 Teachers of the Year!

The holiday season is upon us! The Salvation Army will be ringing bells (and I am sure they would love to have volunteers to help) and will begin their Angel Tree effort to provide for families in need this season. This is certainly a way to give to the community and provide something a little extra special to the children in our community. If you would like information on how you can participate contact Ms. Kristin Arnold who sits on the Advisory Board at SA!

I love the "Gotcha" box at Garfield!! Focus on the good!

As you are well aware, our district's Covid-19 data is posted weekly on our website. This week's numbers at the end of today will likely reflect a significant uptick. Please allow this to serve as a stark reminder to continue to follow our protocol, definitely while you are at work, but hopefully when you are out and about in the community and at home. There is nothing more important to us than the safety of our staff and students. Remember the three W's: Wash your hands, Wear your mask, and Watch your distance. We are at the home stretch for the first semester of school and are pulling it off with immense effectiveness and diligence. Our Sandite team is nothing less that PHENOMENAL!!

What simple advice from Garfield STEAM Academy. Let's all make the world a better place and be nice to people!!

It's important we celebrate our teammates in trying times, especially now! Write a note of appreciation to a colleague this month, maybe even 2 or 3. It will change the course of someone's day. Thanks for all your work! Have a great weekend! ~Sherry
