Definition of Drug
Heroin is a highly addictive analgesic drug derived from morphine, often used illicitly as a narcotic producing euphoria.
History of Drug
The drug was first manufactured in 1898 by a company in Germany. It was marketed as a treatment for tuberculosis and also a remedy for morphine addiction. During the 1850s opium addiction was a major problem in the United States.
How Heroin is Made
Heroin is made from the resin of poppy plants. Milky sap is removed from the pod of the flower, then the opium that was removed is refined to make morphine, and then further refined into different forms of heroin.
Ingredients of the Drug
It is made from morphine which is grown in the pod of the opium plant. It's a mixture of diacetylmorphine which is the active ingredient in heroin and it also contains anesthetic and filler ingredients that share the appearance of heroin like opiates.
How to use Heroin
Heroin can be smoked or sniffed. The most common way of use is through injection. From the very first time it's used, the drug creates a sensation of being high and a person can feel extroverted, able to communicate easily with others and experience a sensation of heightened sexual performance. Users never know the actual strength of the drug which creates a higher risk of overdose
Short & Long Term Effects
Short term effects are:
- Hypothermia, lower body temperature
- Clouded mental function
- Coma or death due to overdose
Long term effects are:
- Collapsed veins and infections of blood vessels and heart valves
- Muscular weakness, partial paralysis
- Loss of memory and intellectual performance
Influence on Persons Behavior & Relationships
Heroin effects peoples relationship with others by causing divorces, losing friends, child abuse or violence against other family members, losing custody of children, and financial issues or job loss. As for behavior, people may lie or be deceptive. They avoid eye contact and their attention to hygiene and physical appearance decreases.
