Westwind Elementary Top of the Class in the Pennies for Patients Fundraising Drive Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to recognize hard work and dedication to change lives

Westwind Elementary is being recognized for their participation in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients Elementary School Program last year. Westwind's National Junior Honor Society finished in the Top 20 out of 504 schools across Arizona.

The National Junior Honor Society is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle level students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1929.

According to Kelly Lyng, Campaign Specialist from the Arizona Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, “Due to the diligence and generosity of the students and the community, they raised enough money to help SIX blood cancer patients and their families in Arizona. We are so excited to honor them at the school located at 9040 W. Campbell, Phoenix, AZ 85037 on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. and present them with their award!”

Rebecca Swiggett, 6th grade Math Teacher and NJHS sponsor, shared her excitement. “Each year we pick a community service fundraising project and last year it was the Pennies for Patients Programs. At our meetings, we research and discuss the importance of community service and the students used their leadership skills to educate others and go the extra mile. We are thrilled to be recognized for our efforts and we love serving as role models for outstanding citizenship and helping others in our school.”
