Our reaction is between sulfuric acid and sugar, this reaction is classed as a dehydration reaction, as you are taking sugar apart and getting carbon and sugar, sulfuric acid has not been changed in this reaction, but is used to trigger the reaction.

The chemicals that makeup this reaction: C₁₂H₂₂O₁₁ (sugar) + H₂SO₄ (sulfuric acid) → 12 C (carbon) + 11 H₂O (water) + H₂SO₄ (sulfuric acid). And as you can see, sulfuric acid is not changed in this reaction, it is only used to trigger the reaction.

This reaction, like all reactions, will react faster if you use any of the methods to speed up the reaction, in this case, we are using more concentrated materials to speed up the reaction.(More concentrated Sulfuric acid in this case)

As you can see, this reaction is exothermic, as it releasing heat, and this reaction releasing steam, which is water heated up, which is a physical change, which is a change in the state of matter.(A liquid into a gas)

All you need for this reaction is sugar, sulfuric acid, and a container to store them in.

Procedure:

First, you pour sugar into your container, Second, you carefully pour sulfuric acid into your container, which would alrighty have sugar in it, then you can just watch the reaction happen.

This reaction is not very dangerous, but I advise you to have parent supervision when doing this reaction.

The chemicals that makeup this reaction: C₁₂H₂₂O₁₁ (Sugar) + H₂SO₄ (Sulfuric Acid) → 12 C (Carbon) + 11 H₂O (Water) + H₂SO₄ (Sulfuric Acid). This equation follows the law of conservation of mass, because you did not create or destroy matter, and only change matter. This reaction is exothermic, as it releasing heat, and this reaction releasing steam, which is water heated up, and that is a physical change, which is a change in the state of matter.(A liquid into a gas) The result of this reaction is black, which is because of the carbon that got separated from water in sugar, and excess sulfuric acid.
