Pre 2016, Hamilton was a little known musical that had been created by Lin -Manuel Miranda. It was years in the making. 7 years to be exact. After its off-Broadway debut in January of 2015, it only took a short while to pick up steam. In February of the same year, they landed their spot on Broadway, in which previews would begin in July of 2015. It officially opened in August of 2015.

They gained most of their traction in 2015, releasing Hamilton's Official Cast Album, hitting #1 on Billboards Rap Chart and being including in Rolling Stones "Best Albums of the Year" list.

January 2016

60 Minutes tells the story of Hamilton saying its "an unorthodox musical with a diverse cast about the life of Alexander Hamilton [and] is creating waves on Broadway and beyond while it smashes box office records."

February 2016

Hamilton: An American Musical wins its first GRAMMY award for Best Musical Theater Album at the 58th GRAMMYs.

This is also around the time Hamilton covers on YouTube were blowing up the internet.

March 2016

At the end of March, the Hamilton casting controversy rose in the media when the wording in the casting notice received backlash. The casting notice specified that the show was seeking "non-white" performers.

This sparked further issues when people pointed out that the ACI didn't speak out about other 'race specific' casting notices. Like this one from the musical Bright Star.

April 2016

April was a big month for the cast of Hamilton.

The Original Broadway Cast Album sold in excess of 500,000 copies which means they went GOLD.

If that couldn't be a big step for the show, in the same month, the show received the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. 1 of 9 musicals in history to win.

April was also the month the Hamilton book was released. Originally titled Hamilton: The Revolution, fans have taken to fondly calling it the "Hamiltome" The book takes you behind the scenes of the musical. From lyric construction, costume designs, cast comments, this book has everything a fan could want. Except for maybe Lin himself....

May 2016

During this time, Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of Hamilton, earns a spot on the wall of the famed theatre district restaurant, Sardi's. The restaurant has been the toasted of Broadway for over 90 years. Anyone whos anyone is up, as a caricature, on the wall of Sardi's.

June 2016

In preparation for the Tony's, the cast released a 360 video of the cast singing "Wait For It"

At this point Hamilton was on a roll. The cast as be nominated for a record 16 Tony Awards. They win 11, including: Best Musical, Best Leading Actor in a Musical, Best Featured Actress in a Musical, Best Featured Actor in a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical,Best Choreography, Best Score, Best Book of a Musical, Best Orchestrations, and Best Costume Design.

On top of winning 11 awards. The company helped open and close the show with host James Cordon, as well as performing, in which was introduced by the Obama's. The 70th annual Tony awards was the most watched Tonys for quite some time, all thanks to Hamilton. Hamilton Mania started after the Tonys, it was quickly gaining more global recognition.

July 2016

July 9th- A sad day for the cast as Lin-Manuel Miranda, Phillipa Soo, Leslie Odom Jr and Ariana DeBose played their finale performances of Alexander Hamilton, Eliza Hamilton, Aaron Burr and The Bullet.

Shortly after,on July 15, Daveed Diggs, the original Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson departs.

After their departure from the show, Javier Munoz took over the part of Alexander, Lexi Lawson took over the role of Eliza Hamilton, Brandon Victor Dixon became Aaron Burr and Seth Stewart stepped in as the duel-role of the Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson.

September-October 2016

Hamilton previews begin in Chicago at the Private Bank Theatre, on September 27 2016, its first location other than New York. The show opens officially on October 19 2016.

Another sad day for the orginal Broadway cast in New York. Renee Elisa Goldsberry, who originated the role of Angelica Schuyler Church, takes her final bow on September 3rd and is replaced by Mandy Gonzalez.

November 2016

Hamilton was back in the news with another controversy on November 18 2016, when Vice-President Elect Mike Pence attended the show. He was greeted with a mix of boos and cheers as the company of Hamilton took a moment to address him.

While President-Elect Donald Trump demanded an apology via Twitter

Pence later said he was not offended by the speech.

On a happier note. On November 10, Chris Jackson, who originated the role of George Washington, was honored with his spot on the Sardi's caricature wall.

3 days later, Jackson took his bow as George Washington one last time.

Another one bites the dust on November 20th 2016, as Anthony Ramos takes his final bow as his duel role of John Laurens/ Phillip Hamilton.

SPOILER: Phillip Hamilton, Alexander and Eliza's son, dies. I mean, its not really a spoiler because he died in 1801....but for the musicals sake, its a spoiler.

December 2016

The final two original cast members departed in December. Jasmine Cephas Jones, who originated the duel role of Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds and Okieriete Onaodowan, who originated the duel role of Hercules Mulligan and James Madison.

The final months of December showed the anticipated release of the Hamilton Mixtape, a collaborative album full of covers of the score of the original musical. Highlighted tracks include "Satisfied" by Sia and "Its Quiet Uptown" by Kelly Clarkson.

Wrap Up

Upcoming in 2017, Hamilton the National Tour, 22 cities have been announced, more to come.

Creator Lin-Manuel Miranda announced a second volume of the Mixtape to be released in 2017.

Lastly, Hamilton is opening in the West End at the Victoria Palace Theatre, London in November of 2017.
