Mrs. Huff's Spanish Class 2018-2019 School Year

My goal is to help students build their skills in speaking, listening to, reading and writing in the Spanish language. I'm committed to creating an innovative classroom experience that encourages learners to become authors of their own learning.

Student Expectations

A large portion of the class will take place in the Spanish language. Mrs. Huff will clarify meaning but students are expected to be active participants in the learning process. They can do this by being prepared, interacting and engaged at all times.

These are the behaviors Mrs. Huff expects and encourages in all Spanish students. A student with these behaviors will have a successful educational experience.

Course Objectives

The focus of our Spanish courses is to build skills in our students. Each Spanish Course is carefully aligned with proficiency standards that encourage growth and development of language. All activities and assessments follow these proficiency guidelines.

By the end of Spanish 2, students will be at a Novice High proficiency level and will demonstrate the skills associated with that level of language.

Grading and Assessments

Students will be measured on their ability to demonstrate their language skills several times throughout a Unit---typically resulting in 12-18 assessments per quarter.

We utilize a standards referenced grading system to measure the proficiency and quality of the student's demonstrated skills. For each assessment, students will be assessed using the following scale:

This standards referenced system of grading incentivizes independent work, skill application and quality of work. High grading marks (100%) are reserved for exceptional work that demonstrates high quality and/or a great application of previous learned material. Students merely complying with requirements are achieving proficiency, which is a mark of 85%.
It's more important now than ever that young people become creators and have ownership of their own learning. I don't want education to be about compliance and that is why I utilize a grading system that encourages independent thought, expression and challenges.

Reassessments

Any student showing just partial proficiency should be able to reassess. In many cases I will try to schedule these individuals for extra instruction to do so. However the option for reassessment is open to all students who follow the reassessment guidelines.

Stay Active and Engaged

Students will have an enriching experience if they stay immersed in the Spanish language--inside and outside of class. There is ALWAYS something every student can be doing.

Stay Connected

Our Spanish class is active on social media, sharing celebrations and creating a transparent classroom that shows a sampling of what we do on a daily basis. Many times the class Social Media representative creates the posts. Mrs. Huff also uses the accounts to share announcements or updates regarding class activities.
