During this lesson you will need:

At Home:

1. Science Notebook and a pencil or pen

2. Internet access (You should already have this as you are using this to review this Web Page.)

In Class:

1. Penny Boat Challenge sheet provided by your teacher.

2. Pen or pencil

3. One piece of aluminum foil cut into a 15 cm x 15 cm square (Provided by your teacher)

4. Several U.S. pennies (Provided by your teacher)

5. Large bowl of clean water (Provided by your teacher)

6. Paper towels (Provided by your teacher)

7. Patience - Yes, lots of patience

Here is a question people are still asking today:

Why did the HMS Titanic sink?

Although we may never really know exactly what happened to the HMS Titanic, as physicists, we need to understand Forces in Fluids and try to figure out why such a big ship was able to float.

Please take out your Science Notebook and add notes as you watch and review the following PowerPoint presentation (Please push the Forces in Fluids button below for the lesson). You may pause the video while adding notes to your Science Notebook.

Now that you have watched the video presentation from the link above, please watch both of these YouTube videos which are additional lessons about Archimedes' Principle.

Be prepared to explain the three different Forces in Fluids, give examples of each, and build a small boat to demonstrate one of these principles.


Standards: The following are the State of Georgia standards for this lesson:

S8P2. Students will be familiar with the forms and transformations of energy.

a. Explain energy transformation in terms of the Law of

Conservation of Energy.

b. Explain the relationship between potential and kinetic energy.

S8P3. Students will investigate relationship between force, mass, and the motion of objects.

a. Determine the relationship between velocity and acceleration.

b. Demonstrate the effect of balanced and unbalanced forces on an object in terms of gravity, inertia, and friction.

*** About $5.00 in U.S. pennies

*** A large bowl of clean water,

*** Paper towels
