The Great Depression

The Great Depression was the longest economic fall that happened in the United States. Things got so bad that peOpl were known for jumping out of windows because their life was so bad. This affected the characters in The Role of Thunder greatly. Every one was loosing their jobs and no one could afford what they usually could afford. Papa in The Role of Thunder is always looking for jobs on the railroads. Things were getting hard for him to find the Railroad jobs. You cannot forget that people were still racist towards black people. This affected the characters greatly because they wanted to be treated like everyone else was treated.

Abolishment of Slavery

When Slavery ended, it was a sign of relief. Black lives matter and colored people were not their slaves. A quote from Lincoln was "and I further declare, and make known that such persons will be received into the armed forces of the United States" ( Abraham Lincoln ). His Emancipation was heard and read by thousands and it made may white people mad backseat they couldn't have free labor. In The Roll Of Thunder Momma was taking to Cassie about slaves. One of the quotes was "“But even teaching us Christianity didn’t make us stop wanting to be free, and many slaves ran away" (Taylor 160)

Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." -The Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America

Lynn hinge is when someone tries to execute you by whipping you. It is usually in a big crowd when it happens to punish someone. One example form the book is when TJ gets surrounded by the big group of men and is lynched or kicked by them. "Papa they hurt 'me real bad and...and..."(Taylor 174)(
