Norwood v Eagles @ Maughan Thiem Hyundai Oval

Norwood League Match Report

Norwood has produced a stunning display at Woodville on Saturday afternoon to defeat the second placed Eagles by 57-points.

After losing half-back Matthew Fuller to concussion early in the first term and forward Luke Surman just after halftime, the Redlegs rallied to kick 11 second half goals to stun the home crowd at Maughan Thiem Hyundai Oval.

Peter Bampton handed the visitors their first of the match after a holding the ball call allowed him to kick truly from 35 metres out. The first quarter in its entirety was a scrappy affair, with both sides making errors with both hand and foot. Ed Smart however had the last say after some great work defensively allowed Norwood to transition and allow Smart to run into an open goal.

Trailing by one-point at quarter time former Central star Josh Glenn returned from an ankle complaint to kick his first in the Red and Blue from a set shot directly in front. The Eagles found themselves in a world of trouble after missing three scoring shots in a row, only to hand Norwood the next six to bring up a handy 17-point lead at the main break.

A fast start was needed by the Redlegs at the beginning of the Premiership quarter and when forward Luke Surman marked strongly from 20 metres out Norwood found themselves 23-points ahead. Despite Surman’s injury Brady Dawe stood up when it counted bringing the ball to ground for small forwards Ed Smart and Cole Gerloff to capitalise on.

Gerloff the youngster from the Eyre Peninsula booted two late goals in the third term, while speedster Matthew Nunn also kicked truly, handing the visitors a 43-point advantage heading into the last stanza.

The final term was one way traffic as the Redlegs intensity and tackle pressure (51-40) proved decisive in the outcome of the match. The Redlegs ability to spread hard from stoppage and put the opposition under immense pressure allowed Norwood to kick six final term goals to seal a memorable 57-point win away at Woodville.

Norwood’s strong bodies in the midfield proved too much for the small Eagles to overcome with the sizeable Mitch Grigg, Ben Jefferies, Matt Panos and Lewis Johnston all topping the 30-disposal mark.

The Redlegs will now turn their attention to Friday night’s blockbuster against Centrals.

Norwood Reserves Match Report

Our Reserves have fallen to a dominant Woodville outfit by 39-points at Maughan Thiem Hyundai Oval.

Despite the loss itself we didn’t have any luck on the injury front with experienced player Callum Bartlett and runner Tom Forster succumbing to hamstring injuries, while key defender James Siviour suffered a knee injury. On a brighter note Norwood welcomed back Caleb Edmead and Anthony Wilson back from injury. Both forwards came away from the match unscathed with the pair booting four goals between them in their comeback games.

Winger, Zac Richards continued his strong form also picking up 25 disposals and seven marks to mount a case for selection this Friday night, while rebounding defender Brodie Carroll picked up 21 disposals including nine marks. The Eagles reserves had some experienced players which included Jared Petrenko and former Port Magpie Tom Gray.

The Reserves next match comes on Friday night as a curtain raiser to the League side which begins at 5:05pm.
