Sauvie Island School Boat Build Students work with Wind & Oar Boat School to create their own model boat

Zach McGarvey, volunteer with Wind & Oar Boat School, works with students at Sauvie Island School on building the center framing of a Bevin’s Skiff model boat on Tuesday, Oct. 8. Students in seventh and eighth grade at the school helped build the boat this week and incorporated science and math lessons into the project.
Volunteer Abby Cummings shows Ayla Powers how to use woodworking tools to mark a straight edge on a plank of wood before using a hand saw to cut it. Students worked on various aspects of the boat build throughout the week, including sawing wood, clamping parts together and using wood glue and screws for assembly.
Students create foil boats and load them with golf balls to test how much volume the boats can hold before they sink.
