Welcome to ECU New Board of Governors members tour campus, cut ribbon for Lab School

New members of the UNC Board of Governors toured campus Thursday and helped cut the ribbon for the new ECU Lab School. The visit highlighted unique aspects of ECU’s campus and programs, demonstrating the university’s commitment to being a national model for student success, public service and regional transformation.

Welcomed in true Pirate style

Board of Governors members toured ECU’s campus by bus before arriving at the Science and Technology Building, where they were greeted by Pee Dee, members of the ECU Marching Pirates, students and ECU administrators.

Chancellor's Welcome

Chancellor Cecil P. Staton welcomed the Board of Governors members and presented an overview of the university’s schools and colleges, highlighting successes and outlining future needs and priorities.

Global Partnership in Education

In the Science and Technology Building, Dr. Jami Leibowitz introduced the board members to the Global Classroom, the central hub for the Global Partners in Education, which promotes global cultural exchanges for university students. Several students discussed the impact that international experiences have had on their lives.

Through the Global Partners in Education program, ECU students interact with 46 partner institutions in 23 countries.

Pharmaceutical Services Network

The board members visited a chemistry lab in ECU’s Pharmaceutical Development & Manufacturing Center of Excellence, a lab-based educational and training network for the pharmaceutical industry.

Laboratory School Ribbon Cutting

UNC President Margaret Spellings, ECU Chancellor Cecil Staton and new members of the UNC Board of Governors attended the ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony for the ECU Lab School Thursday.

Hailed as a model in the state, ECU is one of the first two UNC system schools to open a lab school this fall. Western Carolina University opened the other lab school.

70 second through fourth grade students – the youngest Pirates ever enrolled at ECU –attend the lab school, a collaboration between ECU and Pitt County Schools. The school is located at South Greenville Elementary School.
