The Book Thief Themes By: hannah ortiz

Theme 1: Words Invoke Fear

"The orange flamed waved at the crowd as paper and print dissolved. Bring words were torn from their sentences" (Zusak 112).

In the time of the Holocaust the Nazis wanted to get rid of anything and everything that went against their beliefs especially if it praised the Jews. In their efforts to get rid of everything that did this they would burn books because they didn't want people to read these books and begin to disagree with their beliefs. This shows the strength of fear in words because the Nazis were afraid that if people read these books or saw stuff that praised the Jews then they would begin to rebel.

The article "The Most Dangerous Word in the World" explains how certain words can invoke fear in someone due to the negativity or the past threats of the word. Sometimes when they hear these words, for example, illness, they can feel worried even if there is no actual threat of illness. During the Holocaust the Nazis were scared of anything that praised the Jews because there was the fear of people rebelling against them.

Theme 2: Death is Inevitable

“A small but noteworthy note. I've seen so many young men over the years who think they're running at other young men. They are not. They are running at me" (Zusak 174-175).

This quote basically says that even when people are just living their day to day lives they are slowly getting closer to death whether they realize it or not. Most people don't spend their days thinking about dying but everyone knows that it is inevitable and that one day they will die, you don't know how long it will be or how it will happen but you do know it's unavoidable. Some people constantly worry about dying and don't live their lives while they have them.

These bible verses explain how death is inevitable in different ways and some show what it's like to mourn over a death. It's good to except that death is unavoidable so when it does come it's not as shocking. Also, knowing that death will come no matter what you do teaches you to live your life while you have it and to not worry about dying because it happens to everyone when it's their time.

Theme 3: Love Always Finds its Way in the Harsh World

"From the toolbox the boy took out, of all things, a teddy bear. He reached in through the torn windshield and placed it on the pilot's chest" (Zusak 10)

This quote is from when the plane crashed which ultimately killed the pilot but before the pilot died a little boy found a teddy bear and showed love by giving it to the pilot. This connects to the theme because the little boy found a way to bring love and comfort to a horrible situation. Some situations, especially ones involving people dying, are hard to find love in but if you look hard enough and try to think positive you can always find love and comfort.

This song talks about how when you love someone it doesn't matter the distance between you or the time spent apart, what matters is if you can make it through the hard times with love. This connects to the theme "Love Always Finds its Way in the Harsh World" because if you always look for love in even in the toughest situations then you will most likely find it and it will help you through.
