Center for academic equity

Hope Grant

The Center for Academic Equity Hope Grant offers that investment in student innovation on issues related equity and inclusion during the 2019-2020 academic year. Individuals, groups, student organizations, undergrads collaborating with faculty, staff, and graduate students may apply for grants to execute a program, project, or event designed to invest in creating a more equitable community at Tulane. Grant monies may be requested for speaker honorarium, catering, operational costs such as printing and office supplies, and all expenses related to the execution of the proposed program, project, or event. This grant will not provide a stipend or compensation for grant applicant(s).

The Hope Grant is open to all full-time continuing Newcomb-Tulane College students. Applications will available on the CAE Wavesync page and will be reviewed twice a semester. The maximum award is $500. You may email Dr. Paula Booke, Associate Director, Center for Academic Equity at pbooke@tulane.edu with any questions you may have.

Summer Fellowships and Grants

The Center supports students engaged in original undergraduate research, short-term study abroad experiences, summer school, and unpaid internships with grants, scholarships, and stipends to cover some of the expenses associated with these experiences. Students reflect on and summarize their experiences; presenting the product of their work in the Center’s annual Idea Symposium showcasing research and creative activities. These opportunities provide students with windows into future careers by providing hands-on experiences in their chosen field as well as the knowledge and skills that can set students apart from other candidates for employment and graduate school admissions.

Summer Grants and Fellowships are open to full-time continuing undergraduate students enrolled in Newcomb-Tulane College.

CPS Research Grants

CPS Research Grants support students conducting community-based research as part of an independent study course or an approved honors thesis. CPS defines community-based research as collaborative, change-oriented research that engages students and community members in projects that address community needs. The research grants provide Tulane students with the financial resources up to $500 to conduct research that advances Tulane's research and civic agendas in the context of contemporary New Orleans.

Newcomb College Institute

Gender and Archives Diversity Research Fellowship

The Newcomb Archives is pleased to invite applications for our 2020 Gender and Archives Diversity Research Fellowship program. Open to current Tulane students who are rising juniors, seniors, and those entering a 4+1 graduate program in the fall, these awards are intended to support the discovery of untold stories of Newcomb College and Tulane University through significant archival research. Fellowships come with a stipend of $1,000.

Fellowships are open to current Tulane students who are rising juniors or seniors, as well as students entering a 4+1 masters program in the fall.

NEW Leadership Institute

NEW Leadership Institute is a six-day residential undergraduate program with an emphasis on women in politics. This free six-day residential program will educate undergraduates about the important role that politics plays in their lives.

Phyllis M. Taylor Center for Social Innovation and Design Thinking

The Phyllis M. Taylor Center for Social Innovation and Design Thinking cultivates a diverse network of Changemakers who are working and learning together to create a more just and equitable society. Our university-wide initiatives are globally-aware, community-oriented, and interdisciplinary. Our programs are grounded in the teaching, research, and practices of design thinking, social entrepreneurship, and social innovation.

CHANGEMAKER CATALYST AWARD

The Changemaker Catalyst Fund is open to all undergraduate and graduate Tulane University students interested in pursuing opportunities related to social innovation, social entrepreneurship, design thinking, and changemaking. Students are eligible for up to $1,500 over the course of their studies to support learning in relevant fields. Funding can be used in many different ways, including but not limited to:

  • “Apprenticing with a problem” in an internship or volunteer opportunity
  • Participating in an in-depth field immersion experience
  • Funding a research project to understand a range of organizations across a sector
  • Attending a conference, workshop, or program
  • Purchasing project supplies

Alvarez Spark Innovation Award

The Victor C. Alvarez Spark Innovation Award is open to all undergraduate and graduate Tulane University students that are pursuing a social venture idea. Students are eligible for up to $2,500 per academic year to move their ideas forward. Students must be able to articulate how the funding will help them reach their next growth milestone. Examples may include:

  • Determining the appropriate legal structure for your venture
  • Printing and testing marketing materials
  • Buying supplies to prototype a product
  • Testing a service you aim to offer

Tulane School of Liberal Arts

Summer Minor Program in U.S. Public Policy

The Tulane Summer Minor Program in Public Policy will give students a foundation for graduate school in public policy or a career in government and politics at the local, state or national level. Students complete relevant coursework and participate in service learning that together provide them with tools in the analysis of policy, knowledge in substantive policy areas, and experience in local government. Students completing the minor will fulfill one of Tulane’s service learning graduation requirements.
