Day 1 - Lava!
We started our adventure on the east side of the Big Island in the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. We stayed right on the rim of Kilauea at the Volcano House lodge. We took advantage of jet lag and woke up very early to go view the lava in Hale Ma'uma'u Crater. It did not disappoint! We could hear the lava hiss and sizzle as soon as we got out of the car in the parking lot at Jaggar Museum. The lava lake had at least one erupting hot spot that we could see.
Excursion 1
Aylin, C.J. and I ticked off a bucket list item by taking a lava boat cruise! A 49 passenger power boat sped us westward from Pohoiki Bay to the current location where lava enters the ocean. We got to witness a once in a lifetime phenomenon of the lava "firehosing" out of a lava tube in a heavy flow. There was steam, hissing, and explosions!
