God's gonna cut you down-Johnny Cash By Austin Jensen

What makes Johnny Cash such a legend:

Johnny Cash's western, folk, blues genre revolutionized music. Americans viewed his music as the epitome of American music at the time.

He was very creative in his song writing and his music was very catchy and dance able. When he sings and plays he does so with emotion, it was almost as if the world didn't exist outside of him and his guitar.

God's Gonna Cut You Down- Johnny Cash

"God's Gonna Cut you down" was first performed by Odetta in the 1956 and then Johnny Cash recorded a different version of the song in 2003.

You can run on for a long time

Run on for a long time

Run on for a long time

Sooner or later God'll cut you down

Sooner or later God'll cut you down

The meaning: You can run from God for as long as you want but eventually hes gonna catch you.

Go tell that long tongue liar

Go and tell that midnight rider

Tell that rambler,

The gambler,

The back biter

Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down

Tell 'em that Gods gonna cut 'em down

The meaning: Cash admits that he was sinner like all of us in a way and he learned the hard way in life by relating to being a gambler, rambler, and a backbiter.

Well my goodness gracious let me tell you the news

My head's been wet with the midnight dew

I've been down on bended knee talkin' to the man from Galilee

He spoke to me in the voice so sweet

I thought I heard the shuffle of the angel's feet

He called my name and my heart stood still

When he said, "John go do My will!"

The meaning: He has been on his hands and knees apologizing for his sins and God told him to go live for him and show his love for God.

Go tell that long tongue liar

Go and tell that midnight rider

Tell the rambler,

The gambler,

The back biter

Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down

Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down

The meaning: He admits to his sins and God is eventually gonna catch him.

You can run on for a long time

Run on for a long time

Run on for a long time

Sooner or later God'll cut you down

Sooner or later God'll cut you down

The meaning: You can continue to sin but eventually God's gonna make you pay for it.

Well you may throw your rock and hide your hand

Workin' in the dark against your fellow man

But as sure as God made black and white

What's down in the dark will be brought to the light

The meaning: You can try to hid the things that you do in life but eventually it's gonna come back to hurt you.

You can run on for a long time

Run on for a long time

Run on for a long time

Sooner or later God'll cut you down

Sooner or later God'll cut you down

The meaning: God will make you pay for your sins.

Go tell that long tongue liar

Go and tell that midnight rider

Tell the rambler,

The gambler,

The back biter

Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down

Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down

The meaning: The sinners will pay for their sins when God catches them.

Tell 'em that God's gonna cut you down

The meaning: Gods gonna catch you for the sins that you've committed.

Johnny Cash admits that he was sinner like all of us in some way or another when he related to being a gambler, rambler, backbiter, a midnight rider, and a liar. Johnny wrote this song because he felt that he was cut down by God who allowed Satan to be used on him by teaching him a lesson in suffering and bringing him down to his knees. God is gonna cut us down by allowing Satan on us to give us some unpleasant memories in the hope to turn us to The Good Lord.

The theme: God will cut you down. You can run for awhile but eventually God's gonna make you suffer for your sins. Cash constantly says God's Gonna Cut You Down so that you don't forget that.

The significance- As of January 2016 the song has sold 672,000 copies and Relief Pitcher of the Cleveland Indians Andrew Miller, uses this song during his entrance. Although his song was recorded in 2003, the song didn't get released until July 4, 2006. A music video was also made for this song 3 years after Cash's death that features many famous people. The music video won the 2008 Grammy Award for best Short Form Music Video.
